Seminar on Engineering Yeast Metabolism for Bioethanol Production by Jack Pronk

Seminar on Engineering Yeast Metabolism for Bioethanol Production by Jack Pronk | iBB | Scoop.it

Prof. Jack Pronk will be giving a talk entitled " Engineering of carbon and redox metabolism in yeast for bioethanol production", Thursday the 16th February, at 13:30 h in room QA02.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Jack Pronk is a full professor at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Jack’s fascination for micro-organisms is inspired by their applications in industry. In his research, he aims to understand and improve microbial performance by integrating quantitative physiology, genomics, metabolic and evolutionary engineering. Highlights include the successful engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for pentose fermentation (now commercialized by DSM) and, recently, the functional expression of a pyruvate-dehydrogenase complex in the yeast cytosol, which opened up a new, energy-efficient pathway towards acetyl-coenzyme A as a key metabolic precursor.

The talk is included in the 2nd joint BIOTECnico and AEM PhD Programs workshop that will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico on the 15th and 16th February.

Seminar on Bioprocess Scale Down by Michael Hoare

Seminar on Bioprocess Scale Down by Michael Hoare | iBB | Scoop.it
Prof. Michael Hoare will be giving a talk entitled "Creating new scale down routes to help speed translation of bioprocessing research to full scale application", Thursday the 16th february, at 9:30 h in room QA02.1, South Tower, IST (Alameda). Mike Hoare is Professor of Biochemical Engineering at the Dept of Biochemical Engineering of University College London. His research focuses on creating novel routes to speed the translation from life science discovery to outcome for next generation therapeutics and help ensure wider access. This particularly concerns advanced biological macromolecular and cellular materials and their processing using a complex sequence of stages from a bioreactor through recovery and purification to product formulation ready for delivery.Much of this research is based on discovering ultra scale–down methods to study operations such as centrifugation, membranes, filters and chromatography at the multi–millilitre scale and more recently at the micro–litre scale to allow integration with robotic devices.

The talk is included in the 2nd joint BIOTECnico and AEM PhD Programs workshop that wil ltake place at Instituto Superior Técnico on the 15th and 16th february.
