Major record labels have shifted from legal crusaders to would-be business partners in the space of a year. When Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music filed copyright-infringement suits against AI up-starts Suno and Udio last summer, the industry assumed a bruising court fight was inevitable.

Nine months later, the same companies are at the table hammering out AI music licensing deals that would let the startups keep training on label catalogues – provided the labels and, eventually, their artists – get paid.

These touts made millions and claimed staff at big ticketing firms like Ticketmaster helped [BBC] | Hypebot • new music industry, music marketing & music tech news from across the web | Scoop.it

When a judge dismissed an appeal by prolific ticket tout Peter Hunter and his husband and accomplice David Smith against their landmark conviction for fraud, he sounded an alarm. The evidence, he said in a 2021 judgement, suggested the possibility of "connivance and collusion" between ticketing companies and touts, who buy up tickets for live events in bulk and sell them to the public at inflated prices.

A different judge sentencing another group of ticket touts for fraud, including the self-styled "Ticket Queen" Maria Chenery-Woods, last year raised similar concerns and suggested the possibility some ticketing sites had been "complicit" in the touts making "substantial profits" by reselling tickets.

Formed in 2020 as the COVID pandemic threatened to decimate the live-entertainment business, the National Independent Talent Organization is a 501(c)(6) trade organization that represents hundreds of independent talent agencies and managers nationwide.

In a way similar to the National Independent Venue Assn., the organization sees people who were previously bitter competitors joining together for the common good — a goal that has continued after the pandemic lifted. After securing some $900 million in federal funding for agents and managers during COVID, it has expanded its purview to fighting excesses in the secondary market, issuing a report that shows resale tickets are two times more than face value on average; assisted in the banning of speculative tickets [the practice whereby tickets that don’t exist yet are put on sale] and deceptive ticket-selling practices in Maryland and Minnesota; filed a formal complaint with the FTC on World Ticket Conference and BOT Act Violators; all in the face of fierce lobbying from representatives on the secondary market.
