By signing the Covenant of Mayors, the 13 mayors of South West Flanders already signed for 40% less CO2 by 2030, and on behalf of the same 13 municipalities, regional developer Leiedal organised seven capacity-building workshops on renewable energy and durable heat earlier this year. In these workshops, within the European HeatNet NWE project framework, concrete actions were formulated to meet the climate goals set for South West Flanders.

Motorists get the lion’s share of transport space in the English city of Manchester, yet they make only a small fraction of the daily journeys, a researcher has found. Claiming to show the inefficiency and inequality baked into mass motoring the property researcher worked out that the vast majority of people who travel into Manchester every day do not travel in cars yet motorists are gifted with the bulk of the city’s transport space.

The purpose of placemaking is to improve place qualities in street spaces, parks and other public spaces through collaborating with citizens and capitalizing on the local identity. Focus is on developing public space design from the eye level. Placemaking Week Europe was hosted for the third time ever and this year’s topics had to do with placemaking for innovation, creative bureaucracy, open-source sharing from placemaking practice, future-proof cities and waterfront cities.

Barcelona could cut deaths from air pollution and improve quality of life by implementing in full a plan to calm traffic and free up space for residents, researchers said on Monday. The compact Spanish city is home to more than 1.6 million people and is plagued by contaminants and noise largely due to heavy density of traffic, as well as lacking greenery. A study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), published in the journal Environment International, found the city of Barcelona could prevent 667 premature deaths every year if it created 503 "superblocks" as first proposed.

Located in the far south-east of the Netherlands, close to the cities of Aachen and Maastricht, Heerlen was once a thriving centre for the coal mining industry — but suffered economically after the mines closed. The last few decades, however, have seen cultural sector investment and a growing service industry. Heerlen has been proactive in promoting urban revitalisation: in 2013, it set up Heerlen Mijn Stad (Heerlen My City), bringing various stakeholders together to work on improving the city’s attractiveness.

Over the last five years, something strange has happened at the eastern edge of Karachi, the crowded megalopolis in southern Pakistan. From scratch, a new city has appeared, complete with its own smooth asphalt highways, schools, hospitals, housing options ranging from modest apartment blocks to posh farmhouses — and, of course, an imitation Eiffel Tower. This is Bahria Town Karachi, an ambitious housing development ultimately planned to cover more than 45,000 acres of land — which is about the same size as Washington, D.C. In Pakistan, its name is synonymous with one man: property developer Malik Riaz, one of the ten richest people in the country and the city’s ultimate proprietor. He’s built similar planned neighborhoods near Islamabad and Lahore.

Stepping off the train from Madrid in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city of 252,000 in the Basque Country, northern Spain, felt like stepping into an alternate universe. The doors of the station opened to a cool December evening. I walked down a wide street lined with large magnolia trees, interspersed with restaurant tables, and people strolling in small groups and couples. A couple of people on bikes coasted by. It was so quiet I could hear passing conversations. After the crowded streets and subways of Madrid, it was literally like taking a big breath of fresh air. What was so strange? No cars!
