Italy's Council of Ministers will discuss a draft law that could pave the way for the return of nuclear power in Italy, decades after referendums in 1987 and 2011 led to its phase-out. The draft law, which will be debated in today's cabinet meeting, aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for sustainable nuclear energy production. This framework will cover various aspects, including nuclear power generation, the decommissioning and dismantling of existing plants, management of radioactive waste and spent fuel, research and development of fusion energy, and the reorganisation of competences and responsibilities in the sector.

After years of neglect, Germany has agreed upon concrete steps to reduce emissions from heating buildings, which are directly responsible for around 15 percent of the country’s entire CO2 output. But agreeing on the details of phasing out fossil fuel-powered boilers has proven to be an extremely difficult and protracted process.

Too often in an effort to save Mother Nature, we forget about human nature. Solving problems with rolling out clean renewable energy is less a matter of the physical sciences than the social sciences—overcoming users’ habits and project resistance at the local level.

In this episode, Nicola speaks to narrative strategist Ruth Taylor of the Common Cause Foundation about the ways in which adverts shape our priorities and attitudes to social and environmental issues through appealing to certain cultural values. Ruth offers her take on adverts from Pepsi, Volvo and Apple which seem to appeal to intrinsic values like social unity or caring for nature, but may actually end up undermining these values. Finally, Ruth shares her thoughts on how the advertising industry needs to change in order to genuinely play a positive role.

Katowice hopes to serve as an example to other industrial cities wanting to move away from fossil fuels. Katowice, once the heartland of Poland’s huge coal industry, has joined a group pushing to accelerate the phase-out of coal power in favour of green energy. It is the country’s first major city to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) and Katowice hopes it can serve as an example for others wanting to move away from fossil fuels.

European societies would not run without energy, which is why the energy transition is such a profound transformation. In the first article of our series on urban politics in the climate emergency, we ask whether local energy democracy can overcome the hurdles facing the green transition. Fossil fuels have kept us hooked to large, impersonal energy systems over which we have little or no control. Could renewables re-politicise and even democratise our relationship with energy?

Over the past year and a half we’ve gone on a shared journey to discover how Europe’s cities are evolving to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world. In our first chapter, focused on the quality of urban life, we went to Rome to explore the turn-of-the-century communities that inspired the modern 15-minute city concept, and to Vienna to learn about the city’s brilliant social housing model.

While droughts, floods and abnormal temperature peaks are becoming more frequent in Italy, policy-makers keep showing a lack of will and determination to address the causes of climate change. This failure to act has led climate activists to resort to more radical modes of protest to make their voices heard. In this conversation, two members of Ultima Generazione explain to journalist Elena Pioli the reasons and goals behind their disruptive actions of civil disobedience, and discuss the legal and media backlash they are facing.
