Why Empathy is Declining Among Students and What We Can Do

Why Empathy is Declining Among Students and What We Can Do | Bullying | Scoop.it
Emotional intelligence—and specifically empathy—is spiraling downward among kids

As we keep our ear to the ground, we continue to hear reports that emotional intelligence—and specifically empathy—is spiraling downward among kids. The sociology department at the University of Michigan, led by Dr. William Axinn at the Population Studies Center, tells us that college students today are approximately 40 percent less empathetic than they were just ten years ago. That’s quite a drop. I find it quite strange that in a generation more connected to each other than ever, young adults find it increasingly difficult to feel compassion toward each other. Why is that?

Teach youth compassion, the only cure for bullying

Teach youth compassion, the only cure for bullying | Bullying | Scoop.it

by Ronald J. Coughlin - President, New Jersey Violence Prevention Institute

I have expressed concern about the anti-bullying efforts made by the state of New Jersey, specifically that the program didn’t involve any efforts to help the bully with his or her anger.

It is impossible to stop bullying without compassion training, which regulates anger and prevents future crime.

A recent study by the University of Texas

showed that anti-bullying programs

did not stop bullying.

The Importance Of Creativity In Public Schools

The Importance Of Creativity In Public Schools | Bullying | Scoop.it

In the US (and in many other places as well) the vast majority of teachers teach in public schools. While public education is an awesome offering in many ways, it also comes with a number of not-so-awesome things that many teachers bemoan on a regular basis. I’d say that the number one thing we hear about that would fall into this category arestandardized tests. With teachers forced to spend more time on the subjects that are evaluated with standardized tests, that leaves much less time for teaching other subjects (like art and music) which are now often considered ‘extras’ or ‘luxuries’.

Arlis Groves's curator insight, March 26, 2014 12:05 AM

Young folks today may be surprised to learn that, had they been born a few hundred years ago in Medieval Europe, they might well be working for another family through their teenaged years.
