Eric Byler Cinematic Journalism
I've collected some of my favorite videos over the years since becoming a citizen journalist, combining new media and cinema.  Most of these videos were co-directed by Annabel Park (9500 Liberty, Story of America). There are hundreds more where these came from at youtube.com/storyofamerica and youtube.com/9500Libery

5 Hour Wait to Vote, the 21st century's most cynical election strategy?

This video shot on election day 2012 by Eric Byler, Bobby Wangerman, Annabel Park, and Michael Levin is the best documentation so far of the unfairness of long lines at the polls in urban centers.  Recently, states like Ohio, North Carolina, and Wisconsin have implemented policies designed to achieve this result.  Critics of the "long lines" electoral strategy compare it to Jim Crow practices such as poll taxes, saying that wage earners who miss time at work or have to hire child care in order to wait five or more hours to vote are facing the equivalent of a poll tax. Alabama Police Chief recognized by Obama for "Apology Heard 'Round The World"

One of the great honors on our 18-month (thus far) Story of America journey was meeting Police Chief Kevin Murphy of Montgomery, AL. Recently at the White House, President Obama recognized and thanked Chief Murphy for an act of reconciliation that we documented in the video above.

The exchange too place at the St. Patrick’s Day reception (Murphy is Irish American), when President Obama gave Murphy a personal “thank you” for his continued efforts to improve the relationship between law officers and communities of color. [MORE]

Voter Fraud or Voter Suppression: Which is the Bigger Concern?

Video by Eric Byler, Annabel Park, & Michael Levin for Story of America.

Are the stories about "voter fraud" seen in conservative media outlets based on actual cases of fraud, or speculation about what could occur?

"Stop Your Racism To Hispanics" (Liberty Wall Part 1)

In the summer and fall of 2007, Annabel Park and I were unsure what to do with the footage we had shot documenting the immigration culture war unfolding in Prince William County, VA.  We decided to try something new, an "Interactive Documentary."  This is not the first video in the series, but it is the first to go viral (150K views) and it was followed by more than 100 more videos, and the feature length film, 9500 Liberty.

The "stop your racism to Hispanics" message on the wall at 9500 Liberty Street in Manassas, Virginia was a response to Prince William County's "Immigration Resolution," which required police officers to check the immigration status of people they had probable cause to suspect were in the country illegally, after a traffic stop or other legal contact.

Nokero Brings Clean Solar Light to "The Bottom Billion"

Did you know that 1.3 billion people in the world live without electricity? The majority of these households use kerosine in can for light. I am very proud of this video, which I made with Chris Franks of Starto.tv during my year in Denver. —Eric Byler

Moral Monday 7-15: Women speak up; 101 arrested

This is one of many videos we created to document the Moral Monday movement.  On this day, 101 people were arrested, but as you can see there is a lot more to a Moral Monday action. I've compiled our best Moral Monday videos from 2013 here.

The Difference Between You and a Corporation

Filmed in April 2011, this is my favorite of the Coffee Party videos made during the period between 9500 Liberty and Story of America.  It's a personal editorial set to the music from the Flobots' song "Handlebars."  As you can see, the perspective we offer later became a big part of our cultural and political discourse, thanks in great part to the Occupy movement. Coffee Party's 327 million Facebook impressions that year probably provided an assist.
