Glossarissimo!

"Virtually all interpreters produce glossaries to help them prepare for meetings. Some colleagues keep their nuggets of information stored on scraps of paper which they can hopefully find in their moment of need.

Others have taken to producing glossaries on their computers, either to be printed out before going to the meeting, or kept on a laptop which they can actually use while they are on the job.

There are a number of computer programmes that can be used to compile vocabulary lists or expressions and which can be used for consulting or searching. Most of the professional programmes developed for translators, however, are far too complicated and detailed for use in the booth by interpreters. "My name is Dan Kenig and I am a professional conference interpreter (aiic) with more than 20 years of experience, working mainly in Paris and Brussels.

This software is the fruit of many years of interpreting when, realizing how preparing for an event could often last much longer than the event itself, I looked for a tool that would improve my preparation work while saving me time.

I therefore partnered with Daniel Pohoryles, a software development expert and vendor, and together we created Intragloss, a software program offering specialized functions for simultaneous interpreters.

Our goal was simple: to help interpreters prepare and use glossaries more efficiently, search for terminology more smoothly and rapidly, merge glossaries with preparation documents, optimize old existing glossaries... and in general make interpreters smile happily whenever they think of preparing for an assignment.

Initial design started three years ago, and development included eighteen months of beta testing with more than 150 professional interpreters from all over the world. Five beta versions of Intragloss for Mac were released during that period, each containing bug fixes and new features - and throughout that time we received great feedback and many good suggestions from our users.

Beta testing is over now, as we feel that Intragloss is good enough to be released as a commercial software. I hope you find it as useful as I do - and please do not hesitate to send any feedback that might help us hone our services to better suit your needs!"

"Lo Zingarelli 2016 accoglie circa 500 nuove parole e altrettanti nuovi significati. Ci sono parole e locuzioni nate per innovazioni culturali, legislative o tecnologiche: "adultità, disposofobia, poltronismo, criptomoneta, adozione mite, cogenitore, madre surrogata, acquaponica, memristore, fotodepilazione"; parole e locuzioni provenienti da altre lingue come "macaron, pastrami, netsuke, run flat, Schuldfrage, expat". Inoltre, nello Zingarelli 2016 sono segnalate oltre 3000 parole da salvare: parole come "obsoleto, ingente, diatriba, leccornia, ledere, perorare" il cui uso diviene meno frequente perché televisione e giornali troppo spesso privilegiano i loro sinonimi più comuni ma meno espressivi."

"Technische Dokumentation richtig und benutzerfreundlich übersetzen

Das vorliegende Handbuch soll einem Übersetzer das nötige Werkzeug an die Hand geben, um technische Dokumentation richtig und benutzerfreundlich zu übersetzen. Neben Grundlagenwissen, was technische Dokumentation ist und wie sie aussieht, enthält das Handbuch sprachliche Tipps zum Übersetzen von technischer Dokumentation.

Naturgemäß gebe ich dabei Empfehlungen, die nicht primär für das simple Eins-zu-EinsÜbersetzen gelten, sondern ganz allgemein für das optimale Beschreiben von technischen Sachverhalten. Es werden also im Einzelfall Richtlinien an die Hand gegeben, die zum Originaltext abweichende Formulierungen erfordern und somit weit über das Übersetzen im engeren Sinne hinausgehen.

Inwieweit dies zeitlich machbar und überhaupt vom Auftraggeber erwünscht ist, muss der Übersetzer im Einzelfall entscheiden und ggf. auch mit dem Auftraggeber vereinbaren. Die hier beschriebenen Schritte stellen somit ein ideales Verfahren dar ..."

"Immer wieder gibt es Perioden, in denen bestimmte Krankheitsbilder en vogue sind, so z.B. die „Hysterie“ oder die „Neurasthenie“ in der neueren Geschichte oder ganz aktuell ADHS oder Burn-out.
