Dear readers,
This week, we learned that Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) has introduced an AI-powered chatbot designed to provide verified information on chronic diseases. This innovation, called "ConfIAnce," represents a new frontier in patient information services and raises important questions about the role of AI in healthcare.
Launched this month, ConfIAnce provides information on approximately 30 chronic conditions. The system, built on a customized version of ChatGPT, draws from a knowledge base validated by HUG medical professionals. While not intended to replace medical consultations or provide diagnoses, the chatbot aims to supplement patient care and address the growing shortage of general practitioners.
The project, supervised by two HUG physicians over a two-year period, reflects the increasing trend of AI integration in healthcare settings.
However, implementing AI in healthcare also brings challenges, including concerns about the potential for misinformation. HUG has stated that safeguards are in place, including regular content verification and an emergency shutdown system.
