GeoWorld 7

GeoWorld 7 | Stage 4 Water in the World | Scoop.it

This is a personal review of one Textbook for the Australian Curriculum Geography.

Geoworld 7 is published by Macmillan Education Australia and is on the shelves in most  states now. Other editions will be there very soon.

GTANSW & ACT's curator insight, June 5, 2014 9:12 PM

Looking for a textbook that gives you and your students choice and engaging studies ? Geoworld 7 was written to engage students and facilitate student centred learning.

The key concepts, cross curriculum priorities and skills  are integrated into double page spreads saving teachers time.

If finding that elusive material on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to meet AC priorities has you frustrated the look no further - this book excels in this area.

The online teaching program suggests strategies for choosing content that suits you and your students and provides templates for group work.

Don't be overwhelmed by the volume of content because choice is good and brings the subject alive.

If you are looking for a text that just covers the curriculum content and decides everything you teach then this text might not be for you.

However if you want to challenge your students to think outside the square, learn about the world around them , make choices about the examples they use and work independently or in groups for a portion of their studies of Geography as well as incorportaing ICT  you really should give the Geoworld series a try.

Water sensitive design: integrating water with urban planning

Water sensitive design: integrating water with urban planning | Stage 4 Water in the World | Scoop.it

Water has become a risk rather than an opportunity in our cities and that must change.

At Ecobuild, Professor Tony Wong, chief executive of the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, spoke about the steady progression up the agenda of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) in Australia. Successive years of flooding and some of the worst droughts in history have threatened the health and wellbeing of the population and nearly brought industry grinding to a halt, prompting the government to think differently about water.

A new report published in March reinterprets the WSUD concept and its concludes: for too long, we have been designing water out of our cities when we should have been designing it in.

For example, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) – the creation of ponds, wetlands, swales and basins that mimic natural drainage – can be a cost-effective way to prevent surface flooding while creating valuable public amenities. But we need to go further and join the dots between flood risk management and water resource management, and put water at the heart of discussions about what makes places great to live...
