Goytisolo tells readers what he's up to from the start, that what he's written is "a history of sexuality in the light of Catholic doctrine via a journey through the Spanish language from the Middle Ages to the present." Certainly, these elements combine to give the novel a unique narrative structure and make it a meta-fictional literary experiment that's fun, interesting and finally successful.
