Advanced DASH - DASH with SVC and MVC

Advanced DASH - DASH with SVC and MVC | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

MPEG-DASH allows for efficient transmission of layered codecs, such as the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and Multiview Video Coding (MVC). For efficient transmission of layer codecs, each of the layers is described by a different representation. Enhancement layers/views are considered dependent Representations that depend on representations that contain lower layers, referred to as complementary Representations. The dependency on other representations is indicated in the MPD by the dependency_id (dep_id in the following figures), which indicates additional Representations that need to be downloaded to be able to decode a dependent Representation.

Using Scalable Video Coding for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP in Mobile Environments

Using Scalable Video Coding for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP in Mobile Environments | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

"Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a convenient approach to transfer videos in an adaptive and dynamic way to the user. As a consequence, this system provides high bandwidth flexibility and is especially suitable for mobile use cases where the bandwidth variations are tremendous. In this paper we have integrated the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) extensions of the Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard into the recently ratified MPEG-DASH standard."

Field trial shows potential of SVC with QoE over DVB-T2

Field trial shows potential of SVC with QoE over DVB-T2 | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The SVC4QoE consortium has concluded its project to show how the combination of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and Quality of Experience (QoE) technologies can improve mobile multimedia services using DVB-T2 transmission. SVC means the receive device can be given a base layer video stream and an enhancement layer.

A QoE monitoring probe inside the receive device was used to detect any deterioration in receive conditions so the decoder could respond, if necessary, by using the base layer only to ensure continued service.

Seawell Networks unveils its Spectrum solution, with on the fly ABR packaging, subscr. mgt and QoE features

Seawell Networks unveils its Spectrum solution, with on the fly ABR packaging, subscr. mgt and QoE features | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
"Spectrum is a network-based media management solution that combines on-the-fly high capacity file repackaging with powerful session based delivery and management of adaptive streaming video."

The link with Seawell's existing Lumen SVC encoder is not clearly mentionned but, if both solutions finally work together, it will provide a great optimization of the workflow to serve different ABR streams from a single SVC source stream.

SDC: Scalable Description Coding for Adaptive Streaming Media (Academic paper)

SDC: Scalable Description Coding for Adaptive Streaming Media (Academic paper) | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Abstract : Video compression techniques enable adaptive media streaming over heterogeneous links to end-devices. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and Multiple Description Coding (MDC) represent well-known techniques for video compression with distinct characteristics in terms of bandwidth efficiency and resiliency to packet loss. In this paper, we present Scalable Description Coding (SDC), a technique to compromise the tradeoff between bandwidth efficiency and error resiliency without sacrificing user perceived quality. Additionally, we propose a scheme that combines network coding and SDC to further improve the error resiliency. SDC yields upwards of 25% bandwidth savings over MDC. Additionally, our scheme features higher quality for longer durations even at high packet loss rates.

ITU and ISO/IEC Adopt UCI Forum H.264/MPEG-4 SVC Profile Recommendations

ITU and ISO/IEC Adopt UCI Forum H.264/MPEG-4 SVC Profile Recommendations | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The Unified Communications Interoperability Forum (UCI Forum) today announced that the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has reviewed and approved a set of video coding profiles developed by the UCI Forum. The UCI Forum submitted these profiles to the ITU for inclusion in the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) design for its H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard. A corresponding adoption of the same profiles into the MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC standard has also entered into the approval process of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

H.264/MPEG-4 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) interoperability is a key area of focus for the UCI Forum. These profiles and the resulting ITU/ISO/IEC standard will play an integral role in the UCI Forum’s interoperability certification for SVC-based video systems.

SVC is already implemented in enterprise-class videoconferencing solutions from a number of leading vendors including RADVISION, Teliris and Vidyo, with the intent to implement SVC on the roadmap for companies like LifeSize, Microsoft and Polycom. However, current SVC implementations are not fully interoperable, and therefore a standard needs to be defined in order to certify interoperability scenarios.
