Today Boxfish is officially throwing its hat into the ring after a soft launch earlier this year. At the time, Boxfish fully revealed its plans: Capture every word being spoken on television, load them into its database, make it searchable via its app. But this first iteration was more or less a Web test drive, where we could search and discover television content, but the operation stopped there. Now, the Palo Alto-based startup is lifting the curtain off its official product, an iPad app that allows you to search for TV content in real-time and then acts as a remote, changing the channel to the results as you want to view.

The BBC’s R&D department unveiled an interesting take on the traditional electronic programming guide (EPG) this week that allows viewers to search for people, places and things across tens of thousands of movies and TV show episodes. Channelography is based on captions of close to 170,000 pieces of programming shown across the BBC’s nine U.K.-wide TV networks, which can be searched for close to 100,000 data entities.

KIT Digital unveiled its new social TV solution, the KIT Social Program Guide (KIT SPG), at NAB last week. The KIT SPG integrates users’ social networks with their service provider’s EPG, allowing viewers to enjoy a full range of social TV functions, as well as change the channel, through a single interface. The solution, which has been built with the first and second screen in mind, also boasts support for cloud-based DVR functionality, VOD store integration and multiple e-commerce models and ad serving for advanced content monetization.
