10 Social Media Secrets from the Social Scientist

10 Social Media Secrets from the Social Scientist | omnia mea mecum fero | Scoop.it
Value is the currency on the Web, and the more value you create, the more people will flock to you. It has been said give till it hurts and you will receive it back in spades.

There are some secrets regarding social media that I’d like to share.

I’m a bit of a hard-core social media user and I’ve been doing web and content development for many years now. Because I have been online for a very long time (pre-graphical Web), I am pretty attuned to what constitutes authentic and cooperative behavior online. There are things that set apart the altruistic contributor (check out this cool thing!), for instance, from the self-serving ones (buy my stuff!).

If you do nothing else this year, consider shifting your social media strategy to encompass increasingly pro-social guidelines. The more you give, the more the community will give back, but it needs to be done with a sensitive hand.

Blogging Tips A-Z: G for Goals

Every successful blogger I’ve spoken to had several failed blogs behind them before they finally honed in on their blogging goals and set up a blog that would achieve those goals.

Like most bloggers I set up my first blog as an experiment. I had a vague idea of what I wanted to write about and a secret goal for my blogging.

Well, we all want our blogs to become bestselling books and get made into movies starring Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts don’t we?

But I wasn’t just hoping to kick start my travel writing career and gain worldwide recognition for my writing. I had a few other goals too:

because I’d recently moved from Costa Rica to Australia I wanted to share personal stories so family and friends could follow our adventures; because I’ve lived overseas in eight different countries and travelled to many more I wanted to inspire and inform other women so they could travel more or move overseas too; I wanted my blog to be a fun creative outlet and keep it separate from my web design and web copy writing business.

Can you see a problem here? There are a few of them.

Six ways to create great content in just 15 minutes a day | omnia mea mecum fero | Scoop.it
Content marketing can be an extremely complicated, time-consuming, and expensive proposition! So I came up with content options for the time-starved!

Let’s face it. Content development can be a complicated, time-consuming, and expensive proposition! So I started thinking about this in the context of my friends and small business customers who simply can’t afford that kind of effort. It led to this idea: micro-content, or creating small bits of marketing content when you don’t have time to blog, create videos or spend all day on Facebook.

Let’s examine ideas about using micro-content for your social media strategy, assuming you are testing the water and only have 15 minutes a day to devote to this activity. Hey, I’m up for a challenge!

Preparation

Like any marketing initiative, you must have a firm idea of your strategy, selling points, and target audience...

9 Ways to Improve the Signal to Noise Ratio on Twitter - Brian Solis

9 Ways to Improve the Signal to Noise Ratio on Twitter - Brian Solis | omnia mea mecum fero | Scoop.it

Yes it's a fact... we live in an overloaded information stream! Brian Solis gives us an interesting point of view about this matter. [note mg]

Even at 250 million Tweets per day in addition to the updates across Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, and every other feed that we willfully subscribe to, information overload is in of itself a fallacy. But the feeling the overload of information is very real and a reflection of our inability to pull the levers necessary to decrease noise and improve signal. Doing so, requires some very blatant actions that don’t simply reduce the volume of the information we don’t care to see as often, it requires disconnecting from human beings. Whether we’re severing ties with individuals or those representing an organization we once supported, it’s emotional. It’s an action that carries an element of guilt knowing that at some point, our action will cause an incremental blow to the psyche of the individual we’re unfollowing.

I know…so what right?
