Cary Lecture looks at translation
Lexington —
“Translation and the Meaning of Everything” is the title of the next Cary Lecture on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. at Cary Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington.
David Bellos — author of “Is That A Fish In Your Ear?” — takes an irreverent look at the many sides of translation and asks us to pay attention to what translation actually does, given the many pitfalls of transferring meaning to another language.
Bellos is a professor of French and comparative literature at Princeton University, where he directs the program in translation and intercultural communication. He has written biographies and literary translations, including one for which he won the Man Booker International Translator’s Award.
Tickets for the Cary Lecture Series have been mailed to all households in Lexington. Additional tickets are available at Cary Library, 1874 Massachusetts Ave., and the Town Office Building, 1625 Massachusetts Ave. There is no charge for the lecture. Paperback copies of the book will be available for sale and signing after the lecture and Q&A.
