Vietnam Writers Association launches translation centre

INTERNATIONAL, VIETNAM, CULTURE NEWS
Contributed by: Judith Staines
Date Posted: Thursday, 4th October 2012
The Viet Nam Writers Association launched a translation centre in September to help promote Vietnamese literature abroad.

Literature critic and translator Pham Xuan Nguyen spoke to Culture Vulture (Vietnam News) about translating literature from and into Vietnamese.

What do you think about the quality of literature translation?

Translating literature is growing rapidly. I cannot imagine Vietnamese literature if it lacked literature translated from and into Vietnamese. However, the development of literature translating has caused some outstanding issues.

At present, there are too many publishers, book companies and translators engaged in translating literature. It leads to an uncontrolled market.

As a critic of translated literature I see many mistakes in the translated works. While I think a small number of mistakes is acceptable, 10 mistakes on a translation page is too many. Even people speaking in the same language are sometimes misunderstood. I think there is not a perfect translation in the world. Vietnamese translators are hard working.

Universities to address lack of translators in UAE - The National

A career as a translator requires more than the ability to speak a language - yet professional qualifications are often an afterthought.

The Canadian University of Dubai (CUD) will launch a bachelor's degree in English language and translation this term. Until now, most translation degrees have been at postgraduate level.

And the American University of Dubai (AUD) is to open an Arabic language and translation institute this year and start offering a translation degree next year.

Between them, they will address what experts say are two key problems of translation in the UAE: that translation training is often an afterthought; and that translators' skills are not suited to the fields in which they end up working.

The head of department at CUD, Dr Kathy O'Sullivan, hopes an undergraduate degree will encourage students to consider the field as a career option.

"What happened in this country is that people would start to work as translators usually because they spoke the language," said Dr O'Sullivan.

Only later did they realise they needed training, she said.

The degree will focus on preparing students to work in fields such as law, engineering or media.

My Lord, my fam, my job, my friends: Guest post - Master's Degrees in Translation

There are obviously numerous different paths that can be followed in order to become a fully qualified translator or interpreter. No one definitive route exists that is considered the standalone, perfect way to forge a career for yourself in the industry. In fact, one of the most interesting aspects of working for a translation agency is that I get to meet linguists from all sorts of different backgrounds besides the obvious cultural ones. Many have always operated as freelancers, while others have had careers as translators in the private or public sector or have worked more directly in their specialised field. Some have little more than a bachelor’s degree to their name; others have more qualifications than you can shake a stick at!

One experience that countless translators I come across have benefitted from and speak highly of is completing a master’s degree. Again, master’s graduates I have the pleasure of meeting have done their degree at different stages in their career. Going straight from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s is a common route for translators who know exactly what they want and have the means to do so, although there are plenty who have gone back into studying and working towards a master’s after having considerable experience as a translator.

From gauging the opinion of those at Quick Lingo who have chosen to further their careers with translation-related master’s degrees, I can tell you more about options available from five of the UK’s best universities:

Translation centre to promote nation's literature - Life & Style - VietNam News

HA NOI — The Viet Nam Writers' Association will launch a translation centre next month to help promote Vietnamese literature abroad, according to the association's chairman Huu Thinh.
The centre will gather English, French, Chinese, Russian, German, Japanese and Korean translators to introduce Vietnamese literature to the world.
"Despite much investment by the State in the development of literature and arts, these funds have mainly focused on new works, children's literature and literary criticism," said Thinh. "We don't have financial sources for translating literature."
Speaking at a seminar held last Friday in Ha Noi, the chairman also stressed that Vietnamese culture would be isolated if not enough attention is paid to translating literary works.
"The association will propose a policy to develop translated literature to State leaders," he said in his speech at the conclusion of the seminar.
The seminar was held by the association to review work on translating literature over the past decade. Participants at the seminar were known writers and translators who also discussed the role of literature translators, principles and requirement to literature translation and creativity in translations.
According to a book entitled Vietnamese Literature Translators published in 2002 by the association's Translation Council in co-operation with the East-West Culture Centre, Viet Nam has about 300 prominent translators who took part in translations from the 14th century until the late 20th century.
During the past years, translated literature, including foreign literature translated into Vietnamese, has made a contribution to culture exchange and international integration.

The Centrality of Translation to the Humanities: New Interdisciplinary Scholarship

The Centrality of Translation to the Humanities: New Interdisciplinary Scholarship

“The Centrality of Translation to the Humanities: New Interdisciplinary Scholarship” is a three-week institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for twenty-five participants (including three doctoral students) examining the nature of translation and its place in the humanities. The institute is premised on a vision of translation as a profoundly creative and scholarly act which builds bridges across times and cultures, opening new possibilities for texts and their readers. In the college curriculum, translation is hiding in plain sight. Not only do we teach many texts in translation, but our reading of every text is deeply affected by a complex history of reception, adaptation, and re-translation.

Our purpose is to offer college teachers of history, literature, philosophy, religion, and multi-disciplinary core humanities courses (e.g., topical freshman seminars, great books courses, world culture surveys) the opportunity to enrich our understanding of the texts we teach. Participants will examine key questions in Biblical hermeneutics, study the retranslation and reinterpretation of Sigmund Freud and Rainer Maria Rilke, and explore the role of translation in the rise of a 20th century, Inter-American literature centered on such figures as Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez. Through these cases, the participants study translation as a scholarly craft and cultural dynamic, exploring its historical, philosophical, poetic and political dimensions.

Top language schools translating into a positive future for professional translation services

It is hard to pinpoint exactly when the art of translation would have first occurred. Of course, one of the earliest and without doubt the most translated book in history is The Bible. There were certainly scholars in the days before Christ making a trade from translating ancient Hebrew. Possibly even before that, there were those skilled at deciphering pictures and concepts on scroll.
In an ever-shrinking world, however, where thoughts and ideas are channelled through the virtual waves of the internet, professional translation services are in huge demand. With online translation services becoming increasingly popular, there are literally thousands of translators employed worldwide. It has often been said that ‘knowledge is power’, but in today’s multi-cultural society, we have an inkling that it is in fact fast becoming ‘language’.
With demand, of course, comes the need to supply, and with supply, consequently the need to teach. One of the most famous early examples of translation schooling was at Toledo. Initially set up in the 12th Century by Archbishop Raymond of Toledo, there was focus on translating philosophical and scientific work from ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic into Latin. Later, under the guidance of King Alfonso X, translation was progressed one step further, into what were in fact the early foundations of the modern Spanish language. It was here in the culture rich 13th Century Spain, where multi-culturalism really gained prominence, and indeed inspiration within the ranks of scholars.
Throughout history, as empires have risen and fallen, and new states have emerged, more and more languages have developed. Latest statistics suggest that in the world there now exists an astounding 6909 individual languages. With the culture and politics of the world gradually intertwining more and more, as globalisation takes hold, we are not yet moving towards a mono-linguistic world, but perhaps advances in translation technology is the key.
