Games are key to an interactive and engaging learning. They have the potential to increase students motivation and enhance their learning. Through engaging students in a wide variety of multimodal activities, games can foster a number of essential learning skills that include critical thinking, collaborative learning, strategic thinking, time management skills and many more.

While there are tons of websites and mobile apps that offer pre-made educational games to use with your students in class, it happens sometimes that you can’t find the right game that addresses the specific learning needs of your students. In cases such as these, you will need to design your own games and yes you can do that without the need for prior game design knowledge.

Portals like Poki offer thousands of titles, ranging from all-out action to sports games and puzzles. Every game is free to play, and they have a great selection of educational titles. In his classic, ‘What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy’, James Paul Gee highlighted the importance of incorporating principles of game-based learning into mainstream education. Gee analyzed a number of popular video games and came up with a list of learning principles that he attributed to the success of such games among teens. Plethora of educational gaming sites that are geared towards elementary students. I've used http://funbrain.com and http://abcya.com before with my Kindergartners. A center-orientated system could be effective in getting kids to rotate from computer to computer, entrenching them in different subjects such as reading, writing, spelling, and math.
