Evans is seeking a ban on carrying so-called replica weapons in public, telling the City Council his “biggest fear” is that an officer might kill a child waving a treacherous toy...."

“Saturdays for Brett Smith aren’t about sitting at home relaxing. They are about going to play at the Shawnee North Community Park, 300 N.E. 43rd St., and “dying” for the fun of it.

“Sadly my favorite thing about airsoft is the dying part,” said Smith, a member of Topeka Airsoft, a club that takes its name from the military-style simulation game that uses plastic or rubber BBs instead of balls of paint used in paintball….”

“…More than 30 people, including school resource officers and local business people, spent Monday and Tuesday learning what to do in the event of an active shooter at their campus or place of business.

Drills included elaborate shooter scenarios with airsoft guns, as one rogue participant opens fire at the crowd without warning. Participants are then taught the different options to respond, including rushing the attacker or barricading themselves in a classroom to prevent the shooter from entering….”

“…It gets everybody involved in this type of situation on the same page of the playbook,” Fisher said. “We want to give everybody the chance to survive.”

As administrators and police officers rushed through the hallways at Brentwood Middle School on Tuesday attempting to flee from the man firing his gun — albeit an airsoft gun, they fought off the intruder with balls and rope.

“It’s intense, but we need to make sure our kids are safe,” Lentz said. “Yesterday, we taught our kids to ‘stop, drop and roll.’ Today, we need to teach them how to respond to things like this….”
