Thumpy Covey's insight:

There are not many “new findings” from this abstract of a study from Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas….involving injuries from improper use of what they term “nonpowder guns”…airsoft, BB, pellet and paintball guns & projectiles…Key Points presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics annual conference on October 25:

WEAR EYE PROTECTION AT ALL TIMES…

PARENTS NEED TO SUPERVISE USE BY MINORS…

AND, yet again, because many see these as “toys” and not “guns” (regardless of the supposition that airsoft and paintball guns are “powerful weapons causing increasingly severe and sometimes life-threatening injuries in pediatric patients….” yet another call to, you guessed it…legislate ‘guns.’

To wit we say…You can’t legislate away all risk, and you can’t legislate common sense. Period.

Eye Injury Study says bad things about Airsoft and Kids..but mostly...PARENTS! - Time/WSJ and More

Eye Injury Study says bad things about Airsoft and Kids..but mostly...PARENTS! - Time/WSJ and More | Thumpy's 3D House of Airsoft™ @ Scoop.it | Scoop.it

““These results demonstrate that air guns can cause severe, yet preventable, eye injury among the pediatric population,” explained Dr. Douglas Fredrick. “To reduce rates of pediatric eye injury, both practitioners and air gun companies should promote and lobby for eye safety mandates among all air gun users. Furthermore, changes in state policy to regulate possession and usage of air guns among minors may be warranted to reduce rates of accidental injury.””

Thumpy Covey's insight:

NOT GOOD NEWS!  But it seems most of the reporting on this study from Stanford University puts the cause properly in the hands of PARENTS in supervision, use and eye-pro…

Interesting to see former (??)-airsoft business guy John Steele quoted in the Time article, too…

AIR SMART- Bend Oregon looks at legal changes in PRO AIRSOFT MOVE! - KTVZ.com | Thumpy's 3D House of Airsoft™ @ Scoop.it | Scoop.it

“...The city’s original prohibition on discharge of weapons was adopted at a time when guns were guns, toys were toys, and everyone knew the difference,” stated an issue summary for the code amendments on Wednesday night’s agenda, drafted by Assistant City Attorney Gary Firestone and police Patrol Capt. Ben Gregory.

“The proliferation of items that discharge projectiles but are not intended to cause harm has led to a review of the existing code language and this proposed code amendment,” they continued...."

Thumpy Covey's insight:

Crossing the threshold of Thumpy's two areas of interests is this nugget that will be taken up by the city councilors in Bend this Wednesday night.  If you are a player or business guy in that area that supports as progressive move to improve airsoft's image...we'd urge you to get the info and be a body-in-the-seats at the meeting...

Parents Talking to Their Kids About Gun Safety - NSSF & Project ChildSafe on YouTube

“Can I touch the gun?”
“Can I play with a gun if it looks like a toy?”
“What do I do if I see a gun at my friend’s house?”

Even if kids aren’t asking about gun safety, that doesn’t mean they don’t have questions.

Project ChildSafe has teamed up with Julie Golob, a veteran, competitive shooting sports champion, hunter and mom, to discuss the importance of gun safety education. She’s joined by a group of kids whose thoughts about firearms will help inform parents about the best way to start a conversation. The result is an exclusive video — the first of its kind — to remind gun owners about the importance of having this conversation with their families.

Join us in a discussion about what to say, how to say it and the key elements to think about when speaking to your family about firearm safety.
