Agreement on statistical transfers of renewable energy amounts between Lithuania and Luxembourg | #EU

Agreement on statistical transfers of renewable energy amounts between Lithuania and Luxembourg | #EU | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
The European Commission congratulates Lithuania and Luxembourg for the first ever cooperation agreement on the statistical transfer of renewable energy amounts as stipulated in the Renewable Energy Directive. The agreement signed today (26 October 2017) helps Luxembourg achieve its national renewable energy target for 2020 by receiving a statistical transfer of a specified amount of renewable energy produced in Lithuania. Lithuania reached its national renewable energy target for 2020 in 2015 and aims to further develop renewable energy in its economy.

This agreement shows that these cooperation mechanisms give EU Member States greater flexibility to reach their renewable energy targets, providing them with a useful tool to jointly develop renewable energy potential in a mutually advantageous way.  In this way, countries with more cost-effective and abundant potential in renewable energy can help other countries reach their national targets, as well as help the EU as a whole achieve the 20% renewable energy target in 2020.

How Does a Passive House Work?

How Does a Passive House Work? | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Passive Houses are built according to a rigorous series of design principles that promote efficiency.

The basic building block of a certified Passive House is a virtually airtight, superinsulated envelope that prevents the infiltration of outside air and the loss of conditioned air. Because joints and cracks aren’t a sufficient source of fresh air, Passive Houses are equipped with a ventilator that takes heat from the stale exhaust air and transfers it to the air that is being drawn in from the outside. (In summer, the process reverses, with the cool inside air pretreating the hot intake air before being vented outside.) Passive Houses also are positioned to capture the sun’s natural heating capabilities in the winter while minimizing solar gain in the summer.

The Power—and Beauty—of Solar Energy

The Power—and Beauty—of Solar Energy | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

The solar thermal technology behind Ivanpah—which is being jointly developed by BrightSource Energy, NRG Energy and Google—uses thousands of mirrors to reflect sunlight. That light is collected in one of Ivanpah’s three solar towers, where the intense heat transforms water into steam. That steam is piped to a turbine that generates electricity. It’s the same basic technology behind a coal or natural gas plant—only the sun provides the heat.

Ivanpah also has the advantage of producing electricity on a much smoother curve than solar PV, which means it can keep generating power later into the day. But Ivanpah, which should go fully online before the end of the year, has something else: sheer beauty.

Net Zero Energy Building at Solar Decathlon China 2013

Net Zero Energy Building at Solar Decathlon China 2013 | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

The Solar Decathlon China 2013 is a competition that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are Net Zero, affordable, energy-efficient and attractive.

Summer 2013 will be the first year that a team from Israel will participate in the competition, and their design incorporates passive design features, creating an improved thermal envelope to maintain a comfortable interior environment. Windows, walls, and floors collect, store, and distribute solar energy as heat in the winter and reject heat in the summer...

Since 2002, the Solar Decathlon has involved over 90 teams and influenced thousands of collegiate participants in interdisciplinary research, design and construction of energy-efficient, solar-powered houses.

Nanotechnology and The Future of Renewables

Nanotechnology and The Future of Renewables | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

For many people, understanding the unique challenges of nanotechnology can feel a little overwhelming. After all, the general consensus is, that it will be quicker to list what nanotechnology won’t change. One element that this technology is likely to have a profound effect on though, is the usage and the popularity of renewable energy, which is further explained here.

Still seen today by many skeptics as a waste of time in regards to the challenge of climate change, renewable energy is set to become a major determining factor of our century and beyond. To this end, it appears that a major branch of technology influencing the fulfillment of this goal, will be nanotechnology.

Why Energy Storage is About to Get Big – and Cheap via @ramez

Why Energy Storage is About to Get Big – and Cheap via @ramez | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Storage of electricity in large quantities is reaching an inflection point, poised to give a big boost to renewables, to disrupt business models across the electrical industry, and to tap into a market that will eventually top many of tens of billions of dollars per year, and trillions of dollars cumulatively over the coming decades.

Elena Tarnovetskyy's curator insight, June 28, 2022 12:11 AM

This article is very good. It explains extremely well the economics of energy storage and how it can solve the green energy's major problem. It also shows how energy storage can save money by filling storage facilities when energy is cheap and draining it when electricity is pricey ( Time of Use Arbitrage).

Same Energy, More Power: Accelerating Energy Efficiency in Asia

Same Energy, More Power: Accelerating Energy Efficiency in Asia | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Energy efficiency refers to approaches or strategies that yield more service value from each primary energy consumed.

Making homes, vehicles, and businesses more energy efficient is seen as a largely untapped solution to addressing the problems of pollution, global warming, energy security, and fossil fuel depletion.

Via Lauren Moss
Dawn Mullen's curator insight, July 17, 2013 5:17 PM

In areas of dense population, we should concentrate our efforts toward green and energy efficiency. Any improvement in energy efficiency would be compounded by the number of people this would be available to. That woould increase the cost effictiveness and impact on the planet quickly.
