Those using adding a phone number to their Google AdWords ads or running call-only campaigns have up until now been able to track conversions in a rudimentary fashion only.

Specifically, Google’s conversion tracking has enabled advertisers to track when AdWords ads result in calls of a minimum length.

But recognizing that this offers a limited view of conversions, Google has announced imported call conversions, a new feature that allows advertisers to import call data so that they can attribute detailed conversion data, such as revenue generated, back to the calls generated by their AdWords campaigns.

Companies can already find out when people click their ads on Google and then call a business. But when a person clicks and ad and then explores a bunch of pages on a company’s website and then makes a call hours later, that’s a whole other thing. Google couldn’t track that — until now.

 

Today Google announced the availability of this new feature on its Google Adwords service.

 

Setting up the feature is a matter of adding some code to the website. That action automatically sets up Google forwarding numbers for ad clicks.

If you decide to integrate your inbound calls with your MA/CRM, test first and watch out for two potential problems: too many rings, and a delay from pick up to respond. I've seen too many examples of delays because of cross-platform communication.

Call tracking software enables you to assign a unique, trackable phone number to each individual piece of content you publish. You would then use the software to designate a sales contact for calls that come in from each number — i.e., you can send them to your regular sales line or main business line, to a specific sales agent or group of agents, etc.

 

When a call comes in, the software tracks it back to the specific piece of content it originated from. With this behind-the-scenes process, your sales and marketing teams receive additional insight on your prospects’ needs and interests, yet the additional layer of information doesn’t impact or overburden the callers themselves — from their standpoint, the process remains the same as any other sales inquiry they might make.

 

The call tracking tools can then be used to compile a report on the calls each piece of content generates. And like other marketing automation tools, call tracking data can be integrated into your CRM system, helping your team to follow each phone lead from the point of entry right through the rest of the sales cycle.
