Private blog networks: A great way to get your site penalized - Search Engine Land

Private blog networks: A great way to get your site penalized - Search Engine Land | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
You may have heard about private blog networks (PBNs) before, but you may not be sure what they are or why they are used. A PBN is a network of websites used to build links (and therefore pass authority) to a single website for the purpose of manipulating search engine rankings. This scheme is similar to a link wheel or link pyramid, as it involves several different websites all linking to one another or to one central website.

While these types of schemes were used commonly years ago, PBNs are now considered a pure black hat tactic and should be avoided at all costs, as they can lead to a loss in rankings, or even a manual penalty. PBNs usually provide little to no long-term value to the websites they are linking to.

The #1 Secret to a Successful Blog Post - Gartner

The #1 Secret to a Successful Blog Post - Gartner | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
This gets us to my test. I am not a notably brief blogger. I have averaged about 800-900 words per post, on the high side for my group but not particularly spiked. But in November I tried an experiment and wrote a few tomes — one of which topped out around 4,000 words and included references to matrix algebra and correlation coefficients — and the results are before you: record readership, engagement, response.

So the outcome of my little test is this: Write longer posts

Why does this work? There are a number of trivial reasons and a more substantial one, I think.

  • Search engine politics: Google will likely rank substantial content higher for relevance. More words means more keywords and phrases and length may raise the ‘quality score.’
  • Necessary effort: Longer posts take longer to write; length can be (should be) a symptom that the writer has something significant to say.
  • Time fatigue: Finally, people are tired — so, so tired — of content-free content.
Marteq's insight:

Quantity over quality.

Generate 100+ Blog Topic Ideas in Seconds - Moz

Generate 100+ Blog Topic Ideas in Seconds - Moz | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

"Coming up with blog titles and topics can be a struggle. Most small businesses aim to publish blogs 3-10 times a month and then use these blog articles to populate everything from newsletters to conversion funnels. When you publish content on a regular basis it's easy to burn through your initial list of blog titles in a few months. Coming up with good titles also takes a lot of time, and when you work on a team defining what's "good" becomes subjective.

Because regular blogging has such a positive impact on inbound traffic, the process of coming up with ideas shouldn't be a burden. Never worry about blog topics again: I'll show you how to generate 100+ long-tail blog title ideas that include estimates of search volume and competitiveness."

Marteq's insight:

Forget blog ideas: this is about content creation ideas. Too much to summarize, so please CT.

Five simple SEO practices to remember when setting up a new blog | Search Engine Watch

Five simple SEO practices to remember when setting up a new blog | Search Engine Watch | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it

There are three top ranking signals used by Google to determine if a blog is relevant to a particular search query and how they should rank in search engine results pages (SERPs). They are:

  1. Content – is the content applicable to the search query and how relevant is it?
  2. Links – is your content good enough to be linked to, especially by authority sites.
  3. RankBrain – artificial intelligence used in Google’s algorithm has become the third most important signal.

Here are five quick tips to get you started…

  1. Keyword research
  2. Generate an XML sitemap
  3. Fix your permalink or URL slug
  4. Title tag and meta description
  5. Mobile responsiveness

Not rocket science, peeps.

Why You Shouldn't Use Medium for Your Company's Blog - Connor Phillips

Why You Shouldn't Use Medium for Your Company's Blog - Connor Phillips | The MarTech Digest | Scoop.it
One of the biggest drawbacks of using Medium for business purposes is its lack of support for link building SEO efforts. Any outbound links by default carry “rel=nofollow” attributes, which poses two problems, the first being that all of your hard work is contributing to Medium’s authority score, not your own domain, and two, link building efforts are not possible. As a result, your content will only be as valuable as the traffic that is driven to your website by clicking on outbound links. I'm not saying that this limitation is ineffective in helping gain organic reach, but it severely limits the shelf life of your content and provides no help in growing your domain's SEO efforts.

Beyond the issues with the platforms SEO capabilities is its terms of service. I don’t believe that the team at Medium ever plans to do anything nefarious with your content, but their terms of service states that they are free to use your content in any manner that they would like (Medium Terms of Service).
Marteq's insight:

Solid argument.
