"Concerned about low or late completion rates, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education recently spotlighted college advising practices that will better help students navigate the system and graduate on time. As things stand, less than one-third of four-year college students and only 4% of community college students graduate on time. The practices -- supplementing college advising with structured degree maps, encouraging students to complete 15 credits each semester, intervening when students fail to complete key courses -- are derived from a new study, which will be the focus of a summit for college leaders this week. "

“The danger here is that you have two kinds of problems going on,” said Kati Haycock, president of the Education Trust, a nonprofit group that works to close achievement gaps. “One is a Tea Party problem, which doesn’t have deep roots but does have lots of political muscle behind it, and then you’ve got a bit of anti-test rebellion coming from the left. The question is what’s going to happen if they both get together. That’s the more terrifying prospect.”

"Assigning grades to schools according to standardized test scores is a cornerstone of the education reform movement. But the AP has discovered that when an Indianapolis charter run by a donor who's given over $2.8 million to Republicans scored poorly, former Indiana and current Florida schools chief Tony Bennett changed the school grading system so the charter would receive an A instead of a C. Bennett told staffers anything less than an A "compromises all of our accountability work."
