Index, Search and Visualize What's Inside Large Documents Collections with Overview

Overview is a free tool for investigative journalists, researchers, and other curious people to explore large sets of text documents -- anything from PDFs to tweets.…

Robin Good's insight:

Overview is a new free tool designed for investigative journalists and researchers interested in finding relevant information within large collections of text documents, from reports to social media tweets.

Overview greatly simplifies the task of analyzing, indexing and visualising large document collections in ways that can allow a journalist to identify relevant patterns and threads across thousands of different documents.

Overview is an open-source document mining system which allows you to upload thousands of documents either in PDF format, via theDocumentCloud or through a CSV spreadsheet file. These documents can be rapidly indexed, sorted and analyzed in order to present an organized visual overview of their contents.

"Whether you are a journalist starting with thousands of pages of government documents, a reasearcher facing a huge archive, or a social media analyst starting with 100,000 posts, Overview will organize your documents into topics and sub-topics, and then visualize them -- so you can find exactly what you're looking for, instantly count the number of documents in each topic, or tag entire topics for further work."

"If you believe influence is driven by the creation of a relationship between two parties, where one sees the other as truly knowledgeable about a particular product or service, then let’s talk about the science behind that influence.

"Establishing influence is a multi-step process that moves the influenced through four key stages."

Ness Crouch's curator insight, June 22, 2013 5:05 PM

Excellent article and video. Looking at the wonderful world of the internet and curation. The idea of curation of online content has become more and more inportant with the exponential growth of content on the world wide web. Being able to organise and manage all of the content is important.

Curation is about making good choices about what you share and putting it into a context for themselves and others. Being enthusiastic and thoughtful about what you choose is a way of showing what you are finding and sharing is signficant and worthwhile.

Finding the most interesting and valuable things and sharing that is the key. What you want and what you are interested in is important but you also need to consider your audience.

Digital Content Curation: Good Advice On How To Become A Content Curator

Digital Content Curation: Good Advice On How To Become A Content Curator | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are a librarian, an information scientist or someone who has been trained to sift through lots of information and to extract valuable insight, you will enjoy reading this article by John Warrier published today on Library Journal.

Mr. Warrier, who is information librarian, has two jobs. The first is as a librarian at a community college. The second as a content curator at Neatorama.com where he "highlights" neat, odd, and fascinating bites of amusement, from the latest breakthroughs across hundreds of topics.

In the article he shares his insight and advice about content curation and on what it may take for newbies to break into this field.

"...content curators focus on the news needs of particular professions and industries."

Professional News Curation Examples

1) The staff of PRDaily.com, for example, provides public relations professionals with the latest and the best news about that industry.

2) DesignBoom.com keeps track of the newest and hottest trends in art and industrial design.

3) BusinessInsider.com highlights news about world markets.

Getting Started

You can get started in content curation quite quickly.

a) All you need is a social media platform, such as a blog, Twitter feed, open-access Facebook page, or Google+ profile.

b) Find the best content and add new items daily.

c) Focus not on your own interests, but those of your readership.

d) Prove that you can draw readers as a trusted source and keep them coming back for more.

e) Then you should try to secure an internship.

Many content curation firms, such as Mediaite, Gawker and Flavorwire, offer internships that will give you hands-on training in the field. They’ll train you to examine your audience, compile potential sources and pitch your content to the audience in an attention-grabbing way."

Thought provoking, however, montetization of curation is still very limited. Scoop. It & others offer no means for monetization at all. Like content creation, & most everything on the net, compensation for cuation is still a giant question mark.

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, July 23, 2013 7:26 AM

I've heard everyone from Jaron Lanier to Tim Berners-Lee and a number of other noteworthy tech brains bring up this topic up. How do the creators of content and innovative ideas cash in on the contributions they have made that everyone is passing along and sharing? No one wants their work and thoughts stolen and most everyone I know wants creative people to keep creating what we need and want and would like them rewarded and to be able to earn a decent living doing that. This article is about how we can make sure that happens.

Curate and Monetize Your Best Audio and Video Contents with Pivotshare

Curate and Monetize Your Best Audio and Video Contents with Pivotshare | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Pivotshare is a web platform which allows you to create a branded web site where you can curate, promote and sell your best digital media video and audio files.

The service accepts .mp4, .mov, swf, .flv, .avi and .mp3 files for upload and it lets you set the price and the business model (subscription or pay-per-view or a combination of both) that you want to use.

On Pivotshare you can brand your channel with your logo and customize its look and feel, and you can also "bookmark" specific "spots" inside your audio and video content.

Content on PIvotshare is accessible by both desktop computers as well by smartphone and tablet devices and it has the ability to memorize, for the user, where a sesson is left, so that it can be picked up next time he logs in.

You can set up some of your content to be free and some of it to be accessible only by paying for it. Each channel can be fueled by more than a contributor and you are free to decide who will team up with you.

There are two delivery formats available to curate and organize your key assets: a) the Showcase (ideal for ten items or less) and b) the Library (for collections of 50 or more items).

Revenue-wise Pivotshare takes 30% from a Channel’s revenue, and passes the rest to the Editor and Contributors of that Channel.

To use the service there is no upfront cost.
