Sustainability Science
How might we keep the lights on, water flowing, and natural world vaguely intact? It starts with grabbing innovative ideas/examples to help kick down our limits and inspire a more sustainable world. We implement with rigorous science backed by hard data.

California's gas tax increase has fast-tracked road repair projects. But is that enough to prevent a repeal?

California's gas tax increase has fast-tracked road repair projects. But is that enough to prevent a repeal? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Drivers on the 605 Freeway may notice the ride suddenly gets smoother in El Monte. At least state officials hope they notice. Three months after the state began collecting an extra 12 cents per gallon in gas taxes, road projects are on the fast track to head off a repeal initiative.

DWP still working to repair water main break on Sunset Boulevard

DWP still working to repair water main break on Sunset Boulevard | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews were still busy Saturday morning trying to repair a broken water main that closed a portion of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood on Friday.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

This is the latest high profile failure of our water infrastructure here in California.  This pipe was laid a century ago and concrete-lined to extend its useful life...in the 1950s.  One might think that servicing more than once a century would be on the to-do lists of public works agencies.  I understand all the arguments about why this is so hard, but the fact remains: physical materials wear out and need physical replacing.  That is the long and the short of it.

New carpool lane on northbound 405 finally set to open

New carpool lane on northbound 405 finally set to open | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

After countless delays, cost overruns, gridlock gripes from Tesla's Elon Musk and a phenomenon known as "Carmageddon," officials Friday will finally unveil on the 405 Freeway the nation's longest continuous carpool lane.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

Wow...it only took a billion dollars, a decade of active planning/construction (on top of our twenty previous years of discussions), unions screaming for the "high paying jobs" the construction would provide, beyond aggravated motorists, etc., etc.

Who says we can't do overpriced, car-centric, gasoline-centric, dated-before-it-launches transportation planning?

What does it say about American infrastructure that a pizza chain is paying for our repairs? I don't know, but I'll take it.

It almost looks like a post-earthquake photo. The park, which logged more than 5 million visitors last year, continues to deal with fallout from the rain.

California gas well blowout caused nation's largest methane release, study finds

California gas well blowout caused nation's largest methane release, study finds | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

ThisThe Aliso Canyon natural gas well blowout released more than 100,000 tons of the powerful greenhouse gas methane before the well was finally plugged Feb. 11, according to the first study of the event, to be published Feb. ...

PIRatE Lab's insight:

This is single storage well failure erased all the work we have done fro the past year in terms of CO2 emission reduction in the state of California.  Crazy.  A clear sign that we need to get our energy infrastructure together and another example of why natural gas isn't as clean and the proponents often articulate (hint: leaks are the norm with natural gas infrastructure, not the exception).

Burlington flood: Cities face 'new breed' of storms, climatologist says

Burlington flood: Cities face 'new breed' of storms, climatologist says | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Canadians are facing a ';new breed' of storms, and governments should change the way they plan for the kind of wild weather that caused a flash flood in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. And not only in Canada. All around the world, infrastructure is aging and breaking down. We need to take into consideration the new climate and look for innovations like green roofs, porous pavements and storm management solutions like the various and complementary water solutions at BetterWorldSolutions.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

This is increasingly a problem for our coastal zone worldwide.  And beyond the coastal zone as well.  Just this week we saw flooding outside the Arizona Cardinal's stadium in September and the greatest single day rain event in Nevada history.  While we are always cognizant of not wanting to confound "weather" with "climate," it should be clear to just about everyone that our infrastructure and hardened infrastructure is increasingly not up to the task of 21st century natural hazards.

Trading up from poverty

Trading up from poverty | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON, DC – A long-held tenet of international-trade theory is that, in the long run, increased trade correlates with faster GDP growth.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

I understand all of the macroeconomic arguments, but am still not convinced that the World Bank is the best engine for economic development out there.  Globalization has (from my perspective and the studies I have examined) been quite wrenching and harmful in terms of local, traditional communities/cultures and in terms of overall environmental quality.  I like the fact the World Bank seems more focused on the lower 40% of the world's population (measured by income), but somehow I am not sure they will be particularly successful.
