Stuff Gadget Awards 2013: The Philips Hue + Ambilight is our Home Gadget of the Year | Stuff | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Philips' Wi-Fi enabled Hue lightbulbs have been casting coloured mood lighting around our houses since their launch – and it didn't take long for some bright spark to think, "What if we paired up the Hue lights with our Ambilight TV?" Now you can extend the soothing glow of your Ambilight tellybox out across an entire room, with your Hue lights picking up on the ambient colours shown on the screen. A real lightbulb moment.

Luci Solar Lights | The Portable Solar Lamps by MPOWERD

Luci Solar Lights | The Portable Solar Lamps by MPOWERD | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Luci weighs only 4 ounces and collapses to one inch thin. Add a solar charged lithium ion battery and a 65 lumen light to the mix and you’ve got one impressive lady. Whether it’s for travel, disaster relief or anything in between, Luci always shines bright.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

My mom recently gave me one of these guys.  It seems pretty bright and the collapsable and waterproof nature makes it a natural fit for limited space (e.g. backpacking packs) or off-grid needs (e.g. first aid kits).

Nothing particularly revolutionary here, other than the fact this is a business trying to support the triple bottom line.

How LED Streetlights Will Change Cinema (And Make Cities Look Awesome)

How LED Streetlights Will Change Cinema (And Make Cities Look Awesome) | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
The decision by the city of Los Angeles last year to replace its high-pressure sodium streetlights—known for their distinctive yellow hue—with new, blue-tinted LEDs might have a profound effect on at least one local industry. All of those LEDs, with their new urban color scheme, will dramatically change how the city appears on camera, thus giving Los Angeles a brand new look in the age of digital filmmaking. As Dave Kendricken writes for No Film School, "Hollywood will never look the same."
PIRatE Lab's insight:

An added benefit of the switch to lower energy lighting is the improved color spectrum for our built environment.

This map shows the top 50 markets for energy-efficient lightbulb sales around the U.S.

This map shows the top 50 markets for energy-efficient lightbulb sales around the U.S. | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Since January 1st, 2014, there's been a renewed interest in energy-efficient lighting thanks to a law that requires a minimum level of efficiency from lightbulbs, making the century-old incandescents a thing of the past.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

An interesting map with a nice visual aesthetic.  But there seems to be something a bit at issue.  The top 10 areas (in orange) are not necessarily the top 5 areas (the stars).  There seems to be something about sliceing the data in different ways.  In any event, you can see where Home Depot is selling the most non-incandescent bulbs.

Week in Green: eco-friendly Christmas trees

Week in Green: eco-friendly Christmas trees | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

At this time of year, you tend to see lots of cars with Christmas trees strapped to their roofs. But that could become a less common sight due to climate change -- extreme weather events are making life harder for tree farmers, causing tree shortages in the northeastern US. As an alternative, Inhabitat rounded up a list of this year's top eco-friendly faux Christmas trees. In New York, this year's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit up with 45,000 solar-powered LED lights. In the spirit of the season, Russian photographer Alexey Kljatov took some stunning macro photos of snowflakes by hacking a cheap Canon PowerShot. Inhabitat also unveiled its annual green gadget gift guide, and we shared the real story behind the "design" of Christmas (hint: It involves Santa and 'shrooms).

PIRatE Lab's insight:

LEDs are a much improved option over the traditional indandescents. While we should also be striving to use fewer lights in the first place (i.e. sunlight is better than LED light), this is one area where I am happy to have the technilogy of diodes illuminating these cold wintre nights!
