Islamaphobia and white feminism have an unfortunate way of going hand in hand. Ignorant and fearful people often believe that Muslim women wear the hijab or niqab because they are forced to by a man. However, if these people actually knew anything about Islam, they would realize that women have a choice to wear the hijab, niqab, burqa, or to not cover their hair at all. Modesty is part of the core values of Islam, and a woman's decision to wear a hijab is almost always completely her decision. White, euro-centric feminists try and "liberate" women wearing hijabs because they cannot fathom that a non-Western woman would feel free to wear what she wants. Many people believe that countries where the hijab is prominent are oppressive and misogynistic, and while no country has erased sexism within its borders, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have all had more female prime ministers than the United States.
