Art and Social Media Collide Thanks To Artist Rana Begum on #Instagram

Art and Social Media Collide Thanks To Artist Rana Begum on #Instagram  | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Art of Social Media
Artist Rana Begum wasn't a particular lover of social media nor was she a marketing pro. She had a task and used a tool - Instagram - to help. We'll know we are forever changed when social networks are simple tools we use to accomplish connection and tasks as Rana Begum's art illustrates.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Love seeing creative uses of social media by non-marketing pros.

Haiku Deck: Doesn't Offer Yet (have talked to them about this)

Caveat
If your Apples to Oranges warning light is on we agree. There are so many variables with one of the variables being how each of these tools helps the others so comparison is somewhat moot.

That said here are some random thoughts about each social media / content marketing tool:

Twitter = Frustration
Twitter is always 3 steps forward and 2 back. Each day @Scenttrail (http://www.twitter.com/scenttrail) and @Curagaqmi (http://www.twitter.com/curagami )gain and lose followers. Engagement is limited in this kind of "fire hose" marketing and for every 3 followers 2 drop off (I trim with JustUnfollow) despite my generally trying to follow everyone even remotely related who has followed me or us.

When we see Ashton Kutcher has millions of followers and treats what we work at so HARD as a big joke it's frustrating and maddening. I don't think any team can DO WITHOUT the "radio of the web", but its hard to grow a tribe there. Best to use Twitter for what it is good at - informing your tribe about what is happening now.

Scoop.it = Following & Future of Content Marketing
Scoop.it's ability to form a tribe is outstanding. The stumble comes when we try to figure out how to communicate with, listen to or curate from our followers. We think our Scoop.it "Magazine" Page: @Martin (Marty) Smith should be MORE IMPORTANT.

Scoop.it has 1M users now. We would love to see more Hero Marketing similar to what Haiku Deck does so well. Where is the Top Scoop.it Curators list? Where are the stats showing the Top Scoops of 2014 on a variety of dimensions (share, links, views)?

Scoop.it is sitting in the catbird seat since content curation is about to be the big win, but we would love a more proactive stance from Team Scoop.it. That said, they've been KIND and GENEROUS adopting me despite tough financial times due to cancer treatments. Like Haiku Deck Scoop.it has a great team and they will figure it out.

Goole Plus
We LOVE Google Plus, but losing the charismatic leader Vic Gundotra was a shock. I love hangouts, but they are not enterprise ready full of creaks, pops and cracks when used. Not easy either. GPlus has a LEARNING CURVE.

On the positive side IT'S GOOGLE. I don't know anywhere else where a following of less than 5,000 can generate page views close to 2M. Content on Google gets seen, commented on and that's worth our investment and continued learning.

https://plus.google.com/u/0/+MartinWSmith/posts

Haiku Deck
For team Curagami the real revelation is Haiku Deck. We get MORE for LESS with Haiku Deck than any other social media tool (period, full stop). The fact that our decks, even the old sleepy ones, continue to generate new views is amazing.

Haiku Deck's adoption of our favorite online community / Hero Marketing idea is why our 38 decks are slouching toward 100,00 views after only a year and much less ditch digging than our first two years on Scoop.it. We created a Haiku Deck about their creation of online community:

Haiku Deck Model
http://shar.es/1H5cUm

Yes, Haiku Deck is being helped by the entire ecosystem especially Scoop.it, but if you have ONE thing you can do create decks and pray.

Because no one can do ONE THING anymore (sadly). What about you? What are your favorite social media tools and why?

3 Reasons Marketers Fail Using Social Media | @TedRubin

3 Reasons Marketers Fail Using Social Media | @TedRubin | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Marty Note
Solid post by Ted that explains the subterranean traps many marketers fall into when using social media. Rubin points out that some OLD marketing truths still hold water such as:

  1. You are NOT Your Customer—Do Your Research
  1. Frequency Isn’t a Bad Thing
  1. Story is Important

Great tips here about lessons every marketer learned but seem to forget when "social media" is in front of "marketing".

Neil Ferree's curator insight, December 31, 2014 5:05 PM

Finding your voice, your tempo, your style and your frequency are "almost" as important as the content you curate and share.

Ten Benefits of Social Media Marketing

1. Increased Brand Recognition.

2. Improved brand loyalty.

3. More Opportunities to Convert.

4. Higher conversion rates.

5. Higher Brand Authority.

6. Increased Inbound Traffic.

7. Decreased Marketing Costs

8. Better Search Engine Rankings

9. Richer Customer Experiences.

10. Improved Customer Insights

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I agree with 9 out of 10. I don't think social media, done right, lowers your marketing costs (#7). Maybe eventually, and eventually is in three years or more when your social engine is really tuned, you might sort of lower costs.

More likely you costs will shift from paying for robots to paying for people. We think that is a GREAT trend consistent with the say we see he web moving (from traffic acquisition to creating cherished and valued experience).

Klout: How Social Media Helps Build Your Business

Klout: How Social Media Helps Build Your Business | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
Klout has become a valuable resource for major brands and businesses looking to maximize their influence through social platforms. Here are some reasons your business should consider using this free online service.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Great share from my G+ friend Mike Alton. Many cast aspersions on Klout as an idea. I don't. Klout is what helps us SEE into the social radar. Like any "modeled" number your Klout score will go up and down, but THAT is valuable information.

To deny Klout is to deny the importance of social media and such denial is becoming increasingly crazy.

Social Media Marketing's Party Has Started!

Social Media Marketing's Party Has Started! | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Tackling a social media marketing plan is a bit like eating an elephant - you gotta do it just one bite at a time.

Marty Note
Great starter advice here such as:

Steer clear of divisive topics. Sharing strong opinions on sensitive topics – from politics to parenting – can alienate potential customers. Especially if they have nothing to do with your business, keep opinions away from your social media.

Share and share alike. If you want to grow your network, take the time to provide feedback to people you network with. Share comments on posts in Google+ circles, “like” things on Facebook, take the time to retweet. Oftentimes people in your community will respond in kind.

Add insight. Providing tips or insight to your network gives your business credibility. Take the time to share information that your customers may value.

Master the #hashtag.

If you haven't come to the realization social media IS your business never too late to get with the program. Get started with social media.

B2C Remains Slight Laggards On Social Media Marketing | Infographic

B2C Remains Slight Laggards On Social Media Marketing | Infographic | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

In the past few years, businesses have rushed to use social media. About 94 percent of all businesses now use some form of social media to promote their brand and engage with customers. To be successful businesses need to define their social media goals, know their online audience and have to realize that social media is a marathon not a sprint.

Via Lauren Moss, Vincent Bastide, sophiedesc
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Interesting infographic confirming a trend we see in content marketing too. B2C accounts are slight laggards to their B2B cousins on social media usage and pickup. I have three secret theories about social media:

Secret SMM Theory 1: Not about B2C Long-term
I think real profits will come from using social tools inside an enterprise.

Secret SMM Theory 2: When Doesn't Matter as Much as HOW
If your enterprise is a social media laggard you haven't lost that much yet, and if you jump in with C level support you may be able to leapfrog competitors already using social media marketing but only doing so on the margin.

Secret SMM Theory 3: Who You Know Is Important
Every social media pop we get starts with someone we know, support, follow and want to help. Who you know and who knows you on social media is very important to having the channel pay for the effort you put into it. We try to make that group as large as possible since what we send out and who we are on social media is what we get back.

Kwang Hyun's curator insight, December 4, 2013 8:07 PM

This is just a data analysis how we use the social media. What we use, how we use it, when we use it, etc.

Kwang Hyun's curator insight, December 13, 2013 1:25 AM

Just a simple infographic about the social media analysis. How we use it and what do we use it. It is very important which tool is the best to use and who uses it the most. That's how we get general information all over the world.

Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, July 29, 2013 5:56 PM
Not sure I agree with Tim. Social is social. The fact that Pharma is all wound up on itself is more a reflection of pharma than the way the web works. Google makes no distinction betrween pharma content and any other type. Pharma is the one who binds itself up in knots, but universal content and social marketing axioms still apply.
Tim Mustill's comment, July 30, 2013 8:48 AM
I agree the axioms apply Martin but sadly, due to the self -inflicted knots you refer to and regulation there are some aspects of B2C that are just not practical for prescription medicines. Thankfully the barriers are slowly coming down with more big pharma embracing at least some elements of social media.
Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, July 30, 2013 9:03 AM

Are Women Better Social Media Marketers? Answer: Yes

Are Women Better Social Media Marketers? Answer: Yes | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

I love this debate and come down firmly on the side of women (lol). Women are more socially gifted in general. Yes I know that is stereotypical thinking, but I keep finding DATA to support the idea. At one point I wanted to write a book.

The Feminine Future was going to gather data to prove that women are more gifted and social media and social media is the future of marketing so women = the future of marketing. I haven't been able to write that book, but the truth of it feels even more true now.

What do you think? Are men or women better social media marketers?

Be A MENSCH Not A DeFriender Since Unfriending On Facebook Can HURT

Be A MENSCH Not A DeFriender Since Unfriending On Facebook Can HURT | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Quick IM Lesson For Non-IMers
If you don't work in Internet marketing you may not realize every blog post, social net and Tweet is connected and summarized into a Klout score. Here is my Klout score profile page: http://klout.com/#/ScentTrail

The key chart shows Facebook is half of my Klout score. Klout is being used in job interviews and to asses legitimacy of ideas like http://www.curecancerstarter.org. Right now I have 567 Facebook followers mostly friends form Choate, Vassar and my jobs with P&G, M&M/Mars and NutraSweet (some startup friends too).

When you defriend someone you hurt their Klout score and that could be a very big deal. My Facebook churns - Five come on and five drop off. If you are a friend of mine and I did something that makes you want to hit the UNFRIEND button please tell me what it was so I don't do it again (share WHY even if you go ahead and hit the unfriend button as at least then I will know how to avoid more drop offs).

if your Facebook KLOUT is strong and you unfriend then damage is multiplied. I can't think of a GOOD reason to delist someone from your Facebook. Even the most ardent Facebook content creators don't post more than a few times a day (shoot every second a thousand messages hit my twitter feeds).

Please try to be CAREFUL about defriending your friends who are Internet marketers since to do so could cost them jobs and in my case literaly millions for #curingcancer..

If hurting them is what you want then learn a lesson from a cancer survivor - Life is too short to be that mad about nothing at all. I suspect most "de-frienders" have no idea clicking on defriend could hurt the person they are defriending.

I ONLY defriend for spam and will never defriend people I went to school with or know from the various weigh stations of my career. So please don't draw the defriend gun out unless you really mean to inflict HARM (and even then don't defriend).

lorrinda's curator insight, November 10, 2013 1:50 AM

klout.com sounds like a sort of digital credit score.  wow.  SO -- use this as a basis for formulating  your, "how to handle unfriendly friends on facebook policy."

Virus Finder Microsoft's ViralSearch For Twitter Looks Cool | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

"One of the many undying questions from web publishers, marketers, and regular web users is "what makes something go viral?" which, coincidentally, is also something Microsoft is working on.

Today the company revealed a new research project called ViralSearch that uses a search engine to identify the most popular content on Twitter.

ViralSearch scans billions of pieces of information, including news, photos, and video, and assigns a virality rating to the most popular topics based on how the content was shared via Twitter".
