Who knew the topic of online influence could be so exciting and, well, complex? Apparently, Social Media Today did when they assembled a panel for their “Best Thinkers Series” which is a weekly discussion style webinar moderated by expert journalist Maggie Fox.

 

I was fortunate to participate in this event with Megan Berry, marketing manager from Klout. Pulling together a vendor and a practitioner is no easy task – as online influence was discussed as a concept- what does it all mean, straight through to how does one achieve it on and offline.

Most people, especially those we might consider to be technophobes, would scoff at the notion of social media as art.

 

Yet, if we define art as self-expression, posting is the new painting. Years ago, an artist would create a work of art–be it a painting, a story, a sculpture, or any other medium of self-expression–but find great difficulty in distributing that art.

 

Now, with the advent of social media, production and promotion are one in the same.

Daily Number: How People Use Mobile, Social Networks and Apps to Get and Share Local News - Pew Research Center

Nearly half (47%) of adults get at least some local news and information via their smartphones or tablet computers. While mobile does not top the list of preferred sources for any of the 16 topics asked about, it is clearly a widely-used supplemental source.

 

Thirty-six percent of all adults used a smartphone or tablet computer to check weather reports; 31% used those mobile devices to find local restaurants or local businesses; 25% used mobile devices to get news about their local community; and 20% used those mobile devices to check local sports scores and get updates. In addition, 13% of adults say they get news alerts about their community sent to their phones via text message or email. And 11% of adults say they get local news from applicationson their smartphones.
