Facebook sued for allegedly scanning your private messages

Facebook sued for allegedly scanning your private messages | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
A class-action suit claims that the social networking site monitors and uses your messages for advertising purposes.

The class-action lawsuit, submitted by Arkansas lawyer Matt Campbell and Michael Hurley from Oregon on Monday at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, says that the social networking giant monitors users' private messages in order to compile and mine data which can be used to profile web activity.

===> This data can then allegedly be used for profit through sales to marketers and advertisers -- who then can target ads based on the user's online behavior. <===

Facebook Just Killed A Privacy Setting, So It's A Good Time To Do Your Own Checkup | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Facebook just eliminated your ability to block people from searching for you by name. Here's a guide for tweaking what's left.
Gust MEES's insight:

It's important to note that once you post something on Facebook, or any other social network, it's no longer private, period.

While Facebook makes it fairly easy to control with whom you share information, the best way to keep your information private is to not post it anywhere in the first place.

Thought your private phone photos weren’t on Facebook? Think again…

Thought your private phone photos weren’t on Facebook? Think again… | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
This time, the problem was one of confidentiality, not availability.

Simply put, he found that, if you had Facebook's Photo Sync feature turned on, then any app with permission to access photos on your phone could access your synced photos, too.

Photo Sync means that whenever you take photos with your phone (and that includes screenshots, by the way), Facebook's app automatically uploads them to Facebook's cloud in case you want to publish them online later.

We can't think why that's a good idea, but many people seem to find the feature useful because:

You get an automatic backup of every photo.
Uploaded photos are private by default, so they aren't visible to other people until you want them to be.
It makes it convenient to share photos later on.
Laxman's bug was the fact that apps other than Facebook's own could read those synced photos back from the cloud.

Obviously, if you've authorised an app to access the photos on your device, you have already accepted the risk of allowing that app to do unsavoury things with private snapshots you might take.

So this is not an earth-moving bug, but it's definitely a security hole.
