While the future remains uncertain for Twitter, Meta is throwing its hat into the ring to build the next major microblogging platform. This new Meta app is expected to launch this summer, according to an email shared with a select group of creators, and viewed by TechCrunch.

This text-based app will stand alone, but it will be partially integrated within Instagram. Users will keep their Instagram verification and handle, and all of their followers will receive a notification to go follow them on the to-be-named platform. Meta’s text-based platform will be decentralized and interoperable with Mastodon, which is built on the ActivityPub protocol.

March 10 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) is exploring plans to launch a new social media app in its bid to displace Twitter as the world's "digital town square".

"We're exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there's an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests," a Meta spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.

Instagram has plans to allow users to display their NFTs and even mint new NFTs within the app, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. But what does that even mean? There are quite a few possibilities, and none of them make a whole lot of sense.

Threads, Meta's answer to Twitter, is here.

Launched on July 6, the new standalone app is dedicated to "sharing text updates and joining public conversations", according to Meta(opens in a new tab). This is essentially what Twitter offered, prior to owner and CEO Elon Musk's takeover and several questionable choices unrelentingly aimed at pushing users toward a paid Twitter Blue subscription.

Built by the Instagram team and directly linked to your Instagram account, Threads allows posts that are up to 500 characters long, which can include links, photos, GIFs, and videos up to five minutes in length.

On Wednesday, just weeks after Elon Musk "let that sink in" to the Twitter headquarters, social media consultant and industry analyst Matt Navarra tweeted about Meta's staff discussing building a new Twitter rival with a "notes" feature on Instagram, building a separate text-focused app, or adding new, Twitter-like feeds to Instagram. It'll be called Realtime or Real Reels, or Instant which are fine names except that they all sound the same.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly preparing to allow the posting of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on its social networks and the creation and trading of digital assets via a new marketplace. 

The news comes from a Financial Times article citing anonymous sources with inside knowledge of the company's preliminary plans. According to "several people familiar with the matter," Facebook intends to begin allowing users to post NFTs as their profile images and to upload or "mint" their own NFTs via a prototype system that will generate the required tokens needed to turn a simple image file into this new form of digital asset. 

Two of those same sources also claim Meta is planning its own marketplace for buying, selling, and trading NFTs. If true, this would place the company in direct competition with existing NFT trading outlets like OpenSea, which, as FT noted, just completed a $300 million investment round at a $13 billion valuation.
