Decentralized social network Bluesky is rolling out a new in-app video and music player for links, along with a new “hide post” feature. The new additions bring Bluesky’s user experience closer to X (Twitter).
The new video and music player works with YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify and Twitch embeds. Unlike on X, where autoplay on videos is the default setting, Bluesky’s in-app player won’t autoplay content. If users want to watch or listen to the content, they will have to trigger it with a tap.
As for the new “hide post” feature, you can click on it if there’s something you don’t want to see again. The post will be removed from your feeds and “put behind a mask if you visit it directly,” Bluesky says.

Bluesky is a decentralized, text-based social media platform. We'll get into what exactly that means in a second, but for all intents and purposes, think of it as a social network that offers many of the same core features as Twitter but with the curated communities of platforms like Discord or Mastodon.
You can create short text posts (up to 300 characters) commonly referred to as "skeets," share other people's posts, post photos and reply to other users. Like Twitter, messages posted to BlueSky show up on a newsfeed that your followers and other users can see. Posts can be replied to, liked, shared, reported or shared via other apps. If there's one thing we can count on Meta to do, it's copy another app. Following the latest stretch of tweeting confusion, Instagram's Twitter competitor, Threads, has arrived.
The new app, which launched today for iOS(opens in a new tab) and Android, is basically exactly like your old app, Twitter, but with less Elon Musk and more Mark Zuckerberg. Each post can be up to 500 characters long, in comparison to Twitter's 280 or Twitter Blue's exorbitant 25,000, and each Threads post can include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long — twice as long as Twitter's two and a half minutes but far shorter than Twitter Blue's two-hour-long(opens in a new tab) ability. While the future remains uncertain for Twitter, Meta is throwing its hat into the ring to build the next major microblogging platform. This new Meta app is expected to launch this summer, according to an email shared with a select group of creators, and viewed by TechCrunch.
This text-based app will stand alone, but it will be partially integrated within Instagram. Users will keep their Instagram verification and handle, and all of their followers will receive a notification to go follow them on the to-be-named platform. Meta’s text-based platform will be decentralized and interoperable with Mastodon, which is built on the ActivityPub protocol. What is Bluesky? Bluesky is a "decentralized" social media platform backed by former Twitter CEO and founder Jack Dorsey. It's led by CEO Jay Graber, who was chosen by pre-Musk Twitter at least in part thanks to her background as a crypto developer, according to CoinDesk(opens in a new tab). It was meant to function a bit like Mastodon, another Twitter alternative, with its federated universe of individual servers that users can traverse. But Bluesky is very new, and those separations between communities that ended up working against Mastodon — since many users found them confusing(opens in a new tab) — have basically not been built yet. Mastodon, which proudly proclaims it is “not for sale” and has around 4.5 million user accounts, is pretty similar to Twitter, once users get past the complicated sign-up process. The main difference is that it’s not one cohesive platform, but actually a collection of different, independently-run and self-funded servers. Users on different servers can still communicate with each other, but anybody can set up their own server, and set their own rules for discussion. Mastodon is a crowdfunded nonprofit, which funds the full-time work of Rochko—its sole employee—and several popular servers. How to Join Mastodon, the Ad-Free Social Network Billionaires Can't Buy A short primer how to join the great #TwitterMigration and what to expect from the servers you join.
Six months ago, after the news broke that changes were coming to Twitter’s policies against disinformation and hate speech, I decided to give Mastodon a try. Unfortunately, I didn’t stick with the app long enough to develop a habit of using it. After returning to it once again this week, that’s something I’ve come to regret. In the few days since (mostly) ditching Twitter, I’ve gained a new respect for the platform, which is decidedly less toxic and is far more conversational and troll-free. I’m hoping this very brief guide will serve new users as well as those hearing about it for the first time. Twitter is going through some turmoil at the moment...to say the least. Ever since the new "Chief Twit" took over, many advertisers and popular users have fled from the app, seeking greener pastures. With the competition at its weakest, many Twitter alternatives have stepped up to take the popular app's place. Apps like Cohost, B-Heard, and CounterSocial are offering new, safer spaces for users afraid of what "free speech" looks like on Twitter, however, the app gaining the most buzz as of late is Mastodon. X rival and social media platform Bluesky now boasts over 2 million users, as announced by the team on Thursday. A year after its creation, the Jack Dorsey-backed app marked the milestone while detailing its pending plan of creating a "a truly open social network" — and adding a major feature from Twitter.
Bluesky, a decentralized social media app, is set to add a public web interface, which means users will be able to view posts without being logged in on an account — Bluesky currently still requires an invite code to sign up to its platform. It's a replication of what was once a main feature of Twitter/X, and something that owner Elon Musk has gone back and forth on. Threads, Meta's answer to Twitter, is here.
Launched on July 6, the new standalone app is dedicated to "sharing text updates and joining public conversations", according to Meta(opens in a new tab). This is essentially what Twitter offered, prior to owner and CEO Elon Musk's takeover and several questionable choices unrelentingly aimed at pushing users toward a paid Twitter Blue subscription.
Built by the Instagram team and directly linked to your Instagram account, Threads allows posts that are up to 500 characters long, which can include links, photos, GIFs, and videos up to five minutes in length. Folks are spending less time on Twitter since Elon Musk bought the social media site last year, but there’s still plenty of demand for similar platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky. To that point, Meta has long been rumored to be building its own platform to rival Twitter. After months of speculation, there’s finally some details to go along with the rumors, according to digital media marketing expert Lia Haberman. It’s been called Twitter Article before, but now the bird app’s long-form posts feature goes by Notes, and it’s officially being tested with a few users now.
On Wednesday, Twitter announced via a tweet that it was now testing its Notes feature and introduced it as “a way to write longer on Twitter.” Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/social-media-and-its-influence/?&tag=Twitter

Bluesky is taking a big leap toward federating. On Thursday, the social network announced that it is opening up early access for users and developers who want to self-host their data. While this isn’t true federation yet, the company plans to open up federation to larger servers with even more users in its next phase. When the dust settles, anyone can (in theory) create their own server with their own rules on Bluesky’s AT Protocol.
