The U.S. Government Wants 6,000 New 'Cyber Warriors' by 2016

Salaries for that kind of talent are much higher in the private sector

The Pentagon plans to triple its cybersecurity staff by 2016, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced recently.

A few days later, FBI Supervisory Special Agent Charles Gilgen said at a conference on cybercrime that his agency’s cyber division plans to hire 1,000 agents and 1,000 analysts in the coming year.

Just those two agencies are looking for 6,000 people with cybersecurity skills in the next two years. That’s a very tall order. A look at one way the government has tried to build and recruit such talent—offering university scholarships—shows why.

German Chancellor says she’ll discuss scheme with French President

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday she would talk to French President Francois Hollande about building up a European communication network to avoid emails and other data passing through the United States.

Merkel, speaking on Saturday ahead of a visit to France, has been pushing for greater data protection in Europe following reports last year about mass surveillance in Germany and elsewhere by the U.S. National Security Agency. Even Merkel’s cell phone was reportedly monitored by American spies.

The number of infected computers in the U.S. outpaced, by far, infections in other countries, a security firm found.

Coming in second, and far behind the U.S. in its number of infections, was Japan, where 206,000 computers were compromised by banking trojans.

The U.K. and Canada followed next, accounting for 178,000 and 118,000 infections, respectively, last year.

The US is the number one source of web attacks: The majority of requests and attackers originated in the United States, Western European countries, China and Brazil.

“We believe that, with the current threat landscape, organizations can no longer afford to take an every-man-for-himself approach to security,” said Shulman. “This report demonstrates that the automation and scale of attacks leave a large footprint that can be better addressed by looking at data gathered from a large set of potential victims. Thus it is important to rely on one’s peers to acquire intelligence on malicious sources and apply this intelligence in real time.”

Report shows U.S.has eighth-highest PC malware rate among developed countries, examines new 'ransomware' that hijacks Web cams...

Thirty percent of computers in the United States are infected with some form of malware, putting America among the top 10 most malware-infected countries in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). If it's any consolation, South Korea has the dubious honor of topping that list with a malware infection rate of over 57 percent.

When I read this article, I didn't think it was possible for 30 percent of U.S computers were infected by some form of Malware. This is just the thing that motivates more to work on computer security.
