Von selbst sollten sich die über Snapchat verschickten Fotos und Videos auflösen, und das innerhalb von zehn Sekunden. Am Wahrheitsgehalt dieses Versprechens schien bisher niemand zu zweifeln. Zu Unrecht, wie sich nun zeigte.

Außerdem kritisierten die Prüfer der FTC, Snapchat würde wesentlich mehr Daten über seine User sammeln, als zugegeben: So soll die Android-Version von Snapchat die Ortsdaten der User an Snapchat weitergeleitet haben, obwohl die Privacy Policy das Gegenteil versprach.

"Wenn eine Firma mit dem Schutz der Privatsphäre und Sicherheitwirbt, dann muss sie diese Versprechen auch einhalten," zitiert diePressemitteilung der FTC die Behörden-Chefin Edith Ramirez.

The new Snapchat Spectacles might look like a toy, but connected sunglasses may carry hidden security implications. 

Snap Inc. — the company behind the disappearing message app Snapchat — unveiled its newest product, Spectacles, on Thursday. The sunglasses-turned-video-camera lets you capture quick 10-second scenes that immediately get sent to your Snapchat account on your phone (making them public is another step).

With bold, bright colors and blinking lights to indicate recording, the device feels more like a toy than a serious piece of technology, which only adds to the appeal for its user base. Snapchat says its app reaches a whopping 41 percent of all 18- to 34-year-olds in the United States. Now, users of the app can attach internet-enabled cameras to their faces that capture everything in their field of vision. 

The problem? The product could make it much easier to record personal information and invade another person's privacy without them even realizing it.

Sicherheitsforscher haben für den Kurznachrichtendienst Snapchat eine zuvor undokumentierte Programmierschnittstelle und den Quellcode von zwei Sicherheitslücken veröffentlicht.

 

Damit lassen sich Nutzerdaten abfangen und Fake Accounts herstellen. Die Betreiber wurden bereits vor vier Monaten informiert.


Nach Betreiberangaben hat Snapchat alleine in den USA mehr als 26 Millionen Nutzer. Zuletzt wurden pro Tag mehr als 350 Millionen verschickte Fotos gezählt, womit der populäre Fotodienst Instagram überholt wurde.
