Half a million pacemakers need a security patch | #CyberSecurity #Vulnerabilities | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month approved a firmware patch for pacemakers made by Abbott’s (formerly St Jude Medical) that are vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks and which are at risk of sudden battery loss.

Some 465,000 patients are affected. The FDA is recommending that all eligible patients get the firmware update “at their next regularly scheduled visit or when appropriate depending on the preferences of the patient and physician.

At the time, cryptographic expert Matthew Green, an assistant professor at John Hopkins University, described the pacemaker vulnerability scenario as the fuel of nightmares.

Pacemaker virus could lead to "mass murder"

Pacemaker virus could lead to "mass murder" | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Hackers now have a new attack vector, but one with much more serious consequences than data theft or financial ruin: pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs).

According to research from Barnaby Jack of security vendor IOActive, several vendors’ pacemakers can be remotely controlled and commanded to deliver a 830-volt shock via a laptop, thanks to software programming flaws on the part of medical device companies. That is, of course, enough to kill someone, and Jack noted that the vulnerabilities open the door to “mass murder.”

“Conventional malware is rampant in hospitals because of medical devices using unpatched operating systems. There's little recourse for hospitals when a manufacturer refuses to allow OS updates or security patches."
