As part of their awareness-raising activities, national Safer Internet Centres (SIC) across Europe create a series of resources for children, parents, teachers and other target groups. During Insafe training meetings, organised every six months, centres present their best practices to other members of the network, so all of them can benefit from the resources created within the network.

This time however, the stakes were raised as the SICs were invited to participate in the first ‘Insafe Resource Competition’. Each centre was asked to briefly present its resources in one of three pre-determined categories, after which the members of the audience gave their score, using a scorecard divided into nine categories of assessment.

The importance of education in combatting cybercrime

Czech Republic 04/10/2011
Most people are not aware of the sheer human scale of cybercrime. However it is massive. There are at least one million victims a day and this is a huge number.

This number represents real people – the lives who have been victims of cybercrime. Each of these one million people has suffered some sort of loss – whether it is cash, time or emotional stress. As the internet becomes more integral to daily life and we spend more time online, many appear to be too accepting of the risks and doing too little to keep the cyber thugs at bay.

We have a responsibility to communicate with people what those risks are and help them stay safe online.

Each year, for the past four, Norton has delved deeper into the far-reaching negative affects of cybercrime on real people as well as tried to get a pulse on how the security implications of new emerging technologies and trends are shaping the way people use the internet.

The study continues to be groundbreaking on a variety of levels and further exposes the truly devastating emotional and economic impact of cybercrime. This year the study is the most comprehensive to date as Norton has expanded its research to represent 24 countries, up from 14 last year. It has connected with 20,000 people around the world to gain an understanding of how cybercrime affects real people in real ways and how the adoption of new technologies, such as mobile, will affect people’s security.

The costs of cybercrime are criminal: 388 billion USD lost in just 12 months. While half the world is in recession, cybercrime bucks the trend as a growth industry.
