(CNSNews.com) – In a blog on the Department of Homeland Security website, Secretary Janet Napolitano said her department is working to:

===> develop the next generation of leaders in cybersecurity beginning in kindergarten. <===

“At DHS, we’re working to develop the next generation of leaders in cybersecurity while fostering an environment for talented staff to grow in this field. We are building strong cybersecurity career paths within the Department, and in partnership with other government agencies,” the secretary said.

DHS also sponsors the U.S. Cyber Challenge, she said, “a program that works with academia and the private sector to identify and develop the best and brightest cyber talent to meet our nation’s growing and changing security needs.”

Cyber Security Evaluation Tool Released by DHS...

The Department of Homeland Security launched a product called Cyber Security Evaluation Tool (CSET) in the effort of aiding organizations in properly securing their digital property.

The National Cyber Security Division of DHS and the National Institute of Standards and Technology got involved in the making of this tool that should help companies better evaluate the structure of their network safety.

This way, they'll know what are the weak links and what needs to be improved so cybercriminal activities can be prevented and combated.

US-CERT Warns About DHS-Themed Ransomware
Gust MEES's insight:

Based on US-CERT’s report, I can’t say for certain if the emails in question contain links or attachments that hide the ransomware itself, or if the warning message is displayed directly in the email.

In any case, users are advised to avoid clicking on links contained in suspicious emails. They’re also advised not to provide any information or money to the crooks.

At DHS, we’re working to develop the next generation of leaders in cybersecurity while fostering an environment for talented staff to grow in this field.

We are building strong cybersecurity career paths within the Department, and in partnership with other government agencies. We are also creating training and development opportunities to retain our most talented employees and ensure their professional development. In collaboration with the National Security Agency, we are strengthening the nation’s educational infrastructure by supporting Centers of Academic Excellence across the country.

In addition, we are extending the scope of cyber education beyond the federal workplace through the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, involving students from kindergarten through post-graduate school.

And we sponsor the U.S. Cyber Challenge, a program that works with academia and the private sector to identify and develop the best and brightest cyber talent to meet our nation’s growing and changing security needs.

US: Cyber attacks on utilities, industries rise...

U.S. utilities and industries face a rising number of cyber break-ins by attackers using more sophisticated methods, a senior Homeland Security Department official said during the government's first media tour of secretive defense labs intended to protect the nation's power grid, water systems and other vulnerable infrastructure.

Acting DHS Deputy Undersecretary Greg Schaffer told reporters Thursday that the world's utilities and industries increasingly are becoming vulnerable as they wire their industrial machinery to the Internet.

"We are connecting equipment that has never been connected before to these global networks," Schaffer said. Disgruntled employees, hackers and perhaps foreign governments "are knocking on the doors of these systems, and there have been intrusions."
