The U.S. Energy Department says the electricity system "faces imminent danger" from cyber-attacks, which are growing more frequent and sophisticated, but grid operators say they are already on top of the problem.

In the department’s landmark Quadrennial Energy Review, it warned that a widespread power outage caused by a cyber-attack could undermine "critical defense infrastructure" as well as much of the economy and place at risk the health and safety of millions of citizens. The report comes amid increased concern over cybersecurity risks as U.S. intelligence agencies say Russian hacking was aimed at influencing the 2016 presidential election.

"Cyber threats to the electricity system are increasing in sophistication, magnitude, and frequency," it said in the 494-page report. "The current cybersecurity landscape is characterized by rapidly evolving threats and vulnerabilities, juxtaposed against the slower-moving deployment of defense measures."

Attack could be a warm-up for a larger scale disruption during US election

A massive cyber attack has brought down Liberia's entire internet network, using the same Mirai botnet that knocked a number of US sites offline last month. 

In a series of attacks over the course of this week, hackers have been able to take advantage of Liberia's basic internet infrastructure to intermittently take down websites.

Although the identity of the attackers remains unclear, the hacks made use of the botnet known as Mirai, the same one that targeted domain name system provider Dyn, leaving millions unable to access sites like Github, Reddit, Twitter, Spotify across the US and Europe last month.

International hackers and cyberattackers who launch operations against the UK will be retaliated against, the government has warned, as it sets out plans to protect infrastructure, business, and citizens from online threats.

These tactics form part of the government's National Cyber Security Strategy, an effort to boost defences against a variety of online threats.

The strategy, backed by £1.9bn in funding, was originally set out by the Conservative government under David Cameron.

"Our new strategy, underpinned by £1.9bn of support over five years and excellent partnerships with industry and academia, will allow us to take even greater steps to defend ourselves in cyberspace and to strike back when we are attacked," Philip Hammond, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is set to say in a speech in which he argues Britain "must now keep up with the scale and pace of the threats we face".

Yahoo has disclosed that more than one billion accounts may have been stolen from the company's systems in another cyberattack.

The company said in a statement Wednesday after the markets closed that unnamed attackers stole the accounts in August 2013, a little over a year prior to a previously disclosed attack in September, in which attackers stole around 500 million accounts in 2014.

But the company said it wasn't able to identify the intrusion associated with August breach.

The statement said that the hackers may have stolen names, email addresses, telephone numbers, hashed passwords (using the weak, easy to crack MD5 algorithm) dates of birth, and in some cases encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers.

Yahoo said it has invalidated unencrypted security questions and answers so that they cannot be used to access affected accounts.

But payment card data and bank account information, stored in separate systems, are not thought to have been stolen in the attack.

Every day we seem to hear about new data breaches. Every day users are warned that their personal information may have been exposed, that they should reset their passwords, and tighten their security measures to prevent hackers from exploiting their details.

Today the concern is related to one of the world’s biggest video platforms. Dailymotion, where users upload, watch and share videos, has reportedly been hacked and the details of approximately 85 million users exposed.

Breach notification service LeakedSource, which most recently brought a mega breach at AdultFriendFinder to the public’s attention, obtained the data after the breach which is thought to have happened in October.

As ZDNet reports, the good news is that most of the leaked account details do not have passwords attached.

Not all Internet-of-Things botnets take down the Internet like Mirai did, but that doesn't necessarily mean they should be allowed to perpetuate. Yet that seems to be the case for Linux/Moose, a malware program that recruits IoT devices to engage in social media fraud, according to a pair of reports from ESET and GoSecure.

One of the largest distributed denial-of-service attacks happened this week and almost nobody noticed.

Since the cyberattack on Dyn two weeks ago, the internet has been on edge, fearing another massive attack that would throw millions off the face of the web. The attack was said to be upwards of 1.1 Tbps -- more than double the attack a few weeks earlier on security reporter Brian Krebs' website, which was about 620 Gbps in size, said to be one of the largest at the time. The attack was made possible by the Mirai botnet, an open-source botnet that anyone can use, which harnesses the power of insecure Internet of Things devices.

This week, another Mirai botnet, known as Botnet 14, began targeting a small, little-known African country, sending it almost entirely offline each time.

Security researcher Kevin Beaumont, who was one of the first to notice the attacks and wrote about what he found, said that the attack was one of the largest capacity botnets ever seen.
