AVG will sell user browsing and search info to advertisers | Privacy | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

Starting on October 15, when its new privacy policy comes into effect, Czech AV maker AVG will start selling user activity information to online advertisers.

"We do not, and will not, sell personally identifiable data to anyone, including advertisers," the company noted. "[We] may share non-personal data with third parties and may publicly display aggregate or anonymous information."

What they will sell (to make money from their free offerings so they can keep them free):

  • The advertising ID associated with users' device,
  • Users' browsing and search history, including meta data
  • Information about the ISP or mobile network users' use to connect to AVG products
  • Information regarding other applications users may have on their device and how they are used.

"Sometimes browsing history or search history contains terms that might identify you. If we become aware that part of your browsing history might identify you, we will treat that portion of your history as personal data, and will anonymize this information," they explained in the new privacy policy

AVG anti-virus website attacked by pro-Palestinian hackers

AVG anti-virus website attacked by pro-Palestinian hackers | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
The website of AVG, developers of one of the world's most popular free anti-virus products, appears to have been hacked by a pro-Palestinian group.
Gust MEES's insight:

It’s clearly embarrassing for a security company to hit in this fashion by hackers, but there is no indication that any customer information or sensitive data has been compromised.

Hopefully the AVG team will be able to resolve this issue quickly, and normal service will be resumed.

AVG: Android Malware Is Pushed via Twitter and Facebook...

“We detected a big increase in the use of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to target Android users. Cyber criminals are finding it very convenient to distribute their malware straight to a mobile device via these networks,” said Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technology officer at AVG.

“The growth of the Android platform has been phenomenal, which has not gone unnoticed with cyber criminals who have discovered it to be a lucrative target for their malware. In 2011, Google had to remove over 100 malicious apps from the official Android market, Google Play.”

Submitting Personal Details Online.

Submitting Personal Details Online. | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

AVG Security evangelist talks to ABC News Radio Australia about how safe people feel when asked to submit your personal details online...

Here are few tips on how to recognize a safe place that you can trust with your information:

Make sure you know what company is operating the website and whether it is legitimate.
Look for signs that indicate the site has been reviewed by independent site verification program like AVG LinkScanner®.

Before you hit the Submit button when you’ve entered personal information on a website, make sure the padlock symbol is visible in your browser status bar – this means the site is secure and using encrypted (https) communication to prevent interception and misuse of your data
