Today the Indian Cabinet approved an ordinance that will begin implementation of the world’s largest government-run food security program. The National Food Security Bill, which failed to pass during last month’s parliamentary session, guarantees approximately two thirds of the Indian population a subsidized entitlement of 5 kg of grain each month, with additional stipulations for children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.
