Bolivia is the world’s top producer of quinoa, producing 51,000 tons a year, most of which is exported. The United States is the main buyer. According to the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade, quinoa fetched 3,000 dollars a ton in 2012.

The advertising department of Swiss agribusiness giant Syngenta was on a roll in early 2004 when it published a map that dubbed a large area of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay the “United Republic of Soy”. According to GRAIN, global biotech corporations stepped up their campaign to spread transgenic or genetically modified (GM) seeds in 2012, when most of the Southern Cone countries had governments that were critical of neoliberal policies and that were in favour of a state that played a strong role with respect to social, educational, health and economic questions.

Most organic certification requires the intervention of external certification agencies. Thus, getting your farm production certified is expensive. AOPEB, the Association of Organisations of Organic Producers in Bolivia, brings together and represents organic farmer organisations. Since November 2010, AOPEB steers a large project to launch a Participatory Guarantee System on a national scale in view of significant growth of organic product sales on the Bolivian domestic market.
