Twitter now allows advertisers to target specific words used in tweets | TheNextWeb

Twitter now allows advertisers to target specific words used in tweets | TheNextWeb | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter has finally crossed the rubicon and will allow advertisers to target ads to you based on the words that you tweet. specifically, the feature is called ‘keyword targeting in timelines‘, and its available today in 15 languages and all markets. Twitter previously used the content of tweets to fill out its interest graph for advertisers, but this update brings laser targeting based on the topics that you tweet about to the product.

Twitter uses the example of a person who tweets about enjoying an album from a band. A local venue could use a combination of Twitter’s location-based targets along with a keyword tuned to that band to pop an ad with a link to buy tickets to that band into the user’s timeline as a Promoted Tweet. Twitter stresses that they’re not showing more ads in anyone’s timeline, they’re just going to be showing better targeted ones. And users will still be able to voice their disinterest by dismissing un-relevant Promoted Tweets.

The ad targeting is also “based on the keywords in their recent Tweets and the Tweets with which users recently engaged.” That engagement could come in the form of retweets, favorites and other actions....

HubSpot Makes Twitter Analytics Easier With RetweetLab Tool

HubSpot Makes Twitter Analytics Easier With RetweetLab Tool | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

HubSpot, a marketing software company founded at MIT in 2006, has revealed a brand-new analytics tool that could help companies more effectively use Twitter for branding or promotional purposes.

...Retweet Lab's data is simple to use and surprisingly powerful. For example, in my case it revealed that I get the most retweets at around 7 p.m., even tough I usually tweet the most at 9 a.m. Thanks to the Retweet Lab data, I can now start tweeting more around 7 p.m. and in theory improve my Twitter influence. Similarly, the tool notes that tweets without "calls for action," such as "please tweet this," are infinitely more effective at generating retweets than ones that include such pleas. While this sort of information is useful for my own personal "brand," it's much more likely to be useful for bigger publishers or well-known brands....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I can't say enough about the ReTweet Lab tool. You MUST test drive it. Powerful insight.

Watch a News Story Evolve With Twitter Related Headlines

Watch a News Story Evolve With Twitter Related Headlines | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter is launching a new feature on their site, "Related headlines", where when someone tweets about something newsworthy, Twitter will include links to the news story below the tweet, even when a specific URL to the news story hasn't been included. It's becoming a way for Twitter users to easily click and find information about a news story, without having to go and use Google or another search engine to find a link to the story, or to even have to figure out what the story is if the tweet isn't specific enough.

How it works: when a tweet is embedded into a news story, Twitter can use that to connect the tweet to the story, and then include the news links to that story. It is done somewhat unobtrusively, only showing up on the specific tweet's permalink page. It doesn't show up in the stream for the person who tweeted it, or in the stream of someone who follows that person....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

The debate about embedded tweets continues: asset or intrusion?

Twitter Hires Data Editor To Tell Stories From Tweets - PSFK | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter fills new editorial role with one the world's most innovative journalists.... Twitter has hired Simon Rogers, former news editor and data journalist at The Guardian, to be its first ever Data Editor. The position was created with the sole job of uncovering stories from tweets. Below is what Rogers wrote about his new job in a blog post:

"Twitter has become such an important element in the way we work as journalists. It’s impossible to ignore, and increasingly at the heart of every major event, from politics to sport and entertainment. As data editor, I’ll be helping to explain how this phenomenon works. And I can’t imagine a better job than getting to tell stories based on some of the most amazing data around...."

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is a really interesting move by twitter and seems to indicate its recognition that news and storytelling will be critical in the near future.

Twitter is a very large, very prominent social site, but they are also acutely aware that many of the business people on their platform, have no idea how to use it properly.
