4 Reasons Your Social Media Marketing Should Include Google+ in 2013 | Business 2 Community

4 Reasons Your Social Media Marketing Should Include Google+ in 2013 | Business 2 Community | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Now, we’ve never kept it a secret here at Weidert Group that we were not big Google+ fans when it first debuted. While we’ve had a business page and most of us have personal pages, we’ve not given Google+ the love and attention we’ve dedicated to other platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter and even Facebook.

But as we’ve watched the growth in features and effectiveness, relegating this social media channel to a second-tier status just doesn’t seem to be a good strategy anymore. Successful Inbound Marketing is predicated on being found when relevant prospects conduct an Internet search. Why not dedicate some time to a social media tool that will improve your chances?

We know it’s going to take some convincing, but here are 4 reasons you should add Google+ to your social media marketing resolutions for 2013...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Maybe it's time you reconsidered Google+?

Little Bird found the Community Managers that are most-watched by their peers, other Community Managers.

As we transition from a cold, impersonal, mass-production, one-way-broadcast industrial economy into a world where sales people give you more information not less, where everyone has an important public voice and where empathy is increasingly understood as a social and business imperative, not a form of insanity – the world needs more great Community Managers!...

...we thought we’d just introduce the top 500 Community Managers globally and the top 500 in Europe here in this post using Twitter’s List Embed function. (Here’s a snapshot of our big report, though!)

Why Your Brand Should Stop Stressing About Social-Media Campaigns | Fast Company

Why Your Brand Should Stop Stressing About Social-Media Campaigns | Fast Company | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...allSocial media" remains a source of profound confusion and challenge to brands around the globe, resulting in siloed marketing departments and social campaigns that suffer from a lack of support and the increased awareness guaranteed by traditional media.

But the golden rules of social media--be transparent, honest, and consistent; listen, respond and be respectful--aren't foreign concepts to any communications expert (or, that being said, any socially balanced individual). Many people proudly declare, "I don’t understand social media."

Specialist agencies, "digital ninjas," and the social platforms themselves have succeeded in generating a digital snowstorm of confusion, leading the marketing world into the belief that theirs is a totally new universe of communication....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A quick but thoughtful reminder that it's the communications and not the channel that count most. I particularly liked the three case studies cited.

Tell me you love me: use of 'favouriting' on Twitter soars | Econsultancy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Do you favourite tweets on Twitter? Has your use of this feature increased over the last year?

If the answer is yes, then you are not alone.

A graph from Isaac Hepworth demonstrates exactly how favouriting on Twitter has increased over the last 12 months. It all stems from the major update to the platform Twitter released in December 2011....

It's interesting to note how a change like this from Twitter, albeit a fairly significant one, can begin to alter the way people use a network.

Favouriting increased. But, according to Twitter, it increased in a very specific way. It was often @-replies (i.e. messages that were only really intended to be seen by the recipient) that were being favourited more than more general tweets....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It's an interesting look at the "favoriting" trend as well as a reminder that it can be very useful for curation as well as letting someone know you liked their tweet.

A look at how Maersk's social media manager, operating solo, engages fans on 10 social networks without bottom-line sales or gimmicks. He just tells stories.

When Jonathan Wichmann's boss at worldwide shipping company Maersk Line told him that the company was approaching a point of being ready to dive into social media a little more than a year ago, the two agreed that it would face some difficulties that companies that mainly communicate with the public might not.

"You can't fake it," Wichmann says.

Wichmann was a consultant for the company at the time. After joining Maersk full-time, Wichmann stepped up to handle everything virtually single-handedly.

In the year since that initial meeting, the company has accrued 650,000 Facebook fans and won awards for the social media campaign of the year and best community presence at the European Digital Awards. Maersk pulled that off in such a short time with what Wichmann calls an "insourcing" approach....

Since the quality of videos has risen this year, the problem that emerged was that there were so many good examples, we could have easily made a list containing 150, which would have defeated the purpose.

It's Time to Cut Back on Social Media |Harvard Business Review

It's Time to Cut Back on Social Media |Harvard Business Review | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I recently got back from the New Media Expo in Las Vegas. Scheduled before the massive annualCES gathering, it's a powwow for bloggers and other social media enthusiasts, early adopters who are quick to jump on board the next great thing. So imagine my surprise when I realized one of the undercurrents of the event, burbling repeatedly to the surface, was a desire to cut back on social media efforts.

That doesn't mean doing less overall or abandoning new media. But it does speak to a desire to prune and focus on the platforms that have the most impact. It's hard to say no to the crush of social media demands. During a panel I moderated with well-known blogger and tech expert Robert Scoble, he said there was no alternative to constant, ubiquitous engagement and held up a spare battery he carried for his smartphone, so he'd never run out of juice. No time to respond to tweets? Do it while you're walking down the hallway, he said. Plenty of people agree with him....

Feeling overwhelmed by too much social media? Nice counterpoint from Dorie Clark.

A PR Pro's Guide to Google+ Communities and our prediction for its success

...The concept of a group discussion site is nothing new (think Facebook Groups, Yahoo! Groups and LinkedIn groups) but what sets Google+ Communities apart is the integration of the topical groups into the social platform.  For example, members of a group can capitalize on the hangout feature of Google+ and take part in a video chat within the group. Additionally, because the communities ‘live’ on Google, the Events calendar feature is enabled within communities, allowing photo sharing and event management to happen more easily.

One of the biggest differences in Google+ Communities versus other discussion groups is that you don’t have to actually visit the community’s URL to take part in the conversation. Users can share links directly with their communities simply using the +1 button that is now integrated into most social sharing technologies.  Another function unique to Google+ Communities is that conversations can be tagged and categorized, so members can find pieces of the discussion that are most relevant to them....
