What Eight Million Livestreams Really Means | All Things D

What Eight Million Livestreams Really Means | All Things D | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
YouTube can now deliver live TV to a global audience at the same scale as TV. But the future of live Web video is probably going to be niche, not mass.

That crazy leap that Felix Baumgartner made was astonishing.
And if you’re interested in the future of Web video, YouTube’s ability to serve up eight million livestreams at the same time is a really big deal, too.

As I noted yesterday, that number blows away YouTube’s previous peak of 500,000 concurrent streams, which it hit this summer during the Olympics, as well as last year during the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

So it doesn’t take much imagination to envision YouTube doing this kind of stuff, at this scale, on a regular basis. Which would mean the Web finally has a chance to rival TV when it comes to serving up live events with huge audiences — one of TV’s last remaining advantages over the Internet....

But YouTube is still going to be an important platform for live stuff. It’s just that you probably won’t see most of it, unless you’re in a very particular niche....

Newslook iPad app brings order to news video viewing | GigaOm | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
While video lovers have gotten more social services that highlight interesting clips, it's still hard to construct a more comprehensive look at video news.

That’s the gap that New York state startup Newslook is trying to fill with a new iPad app that allows users to construct channels of their favorite news subjects on the fly....

TV Everywhere’s Counting Problem

TV Everywhere’s Counting Problem | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
The big-media guys know how to serve up video to you on any device, anywhere you are, anytime you want it. But keeping track of it is another issue.

“TV Everywhere” is supposed to let the traditional TV business hang on to the status quo, by promising viewers they can watch whatever they want, whenever they want it.

As long as they keep paying for TV.

But even if consumers go for that deal, the TV guys need to make sure that advertisers buy in, too.
And that won’t happen until the TV guys can get some basic stuff right. Like counting eyeballs, no matter where they watch a show.

That could still take a while....

The future of TV is more than social, it’s a multi-screen experience that needs design - Brian Solis

The future of TV is more than social, it’s a multi-screen experience that needs design - Brian Solis | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The future of television is much more than social; much in the same way that the future of media is too, more than social. Social is a fabric; it connects the individual nodes that make up the human network. But, social however, is not a means to an end. And, as such, the same is true about the working theories driving Social TV. Understanding the role social plays in how viewers connect with programs and other people is essential to defining the future of television....

Assessing the opportunity of YouTube marketing - Smart Insights Digital Marketing Advice

Assessing the opportunity of YouTube marketing - Smart Insights Digital Marketing Advice | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

As you’ll know, YouTube is the second largest search engine behind Google in many countries. It’s the number one ranked entertainment site and 3rd most visited in the UK by Hitwise. Given this and since popular videos are displayed in the “one-box” of blended search results for some queries it’s worth investigating how YouTube can be used to reach a wider audience.

In this post I’ll give a short tutorial on how to find out it’s relevance in your market by finding out the number of searches. I’m not suggesting it will give instant results or as Forrester misguidely advised that it’s the Easiest Way to a First-page ranking on Google. It may even help you “push back” against colleagues who are asking why you’re not doing more work in YouTube....

The Whole Story - Social Media and TV | MediaPost

The Whole Story - Social Media and TV | MediaPost | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The considerable amount of enthusiasm for Social TV is possibly only matched by the desire to know more about what is actually going on –- how the relationship between social media and TV actually plays out and what each delivers to the other....

The analysis shows TV to be relatively low throughout the day, only to climb significantly from late in the day into prime time, where it is the dominant single medium.

More noteworthy, social media actually follows a similar pattern. Although attaining a higher level of use during the day than TV -– and while it is eventually surpassed as TV viewing rises late in the day -- the peak time for social media use almost exactly mirrors TV....

Social TV has reached new heights over the past year or so. Indicators include the “most social TV event in history” (this year’s Grammy Awards) and device makers like Panasonic integrating social experiences when producing new waves of Smart TVs. It’s clear that consumers and brands are at a communications crossroad, furthering the paradigm shift in how consumers engage with content.

At the Social TV: Storytelling on the Second Screen panel at the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), presenters including Tom Donohue, CEO & Founder of Trendrr and Greg Consiglio, SVP of Business Development at Viggle, discussed the inherent opportunities and limits of interactivity as it relates to television viewing....

How FOX is the most social TV network | Lost Remote | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

On the eve of Fox’s annual upfront, we spoke with David Wetheimer, the president of digital for Fox, who was also featured in a recent USA Today social TV story. The past year has been a defining one for the network’s social TV efforts. Partnering with Twitter for DM-based voting for X Factor and launching “Touch,” the first ever global social launch were just among their many innovations.

According to Bluefin Labs (for data between 9/19-11 and 5/6/12), Fox is the leading social TV network in the US with the most amount of “total social comments (among any TV network; cable/premium cable or broadcast)” and has the most number of “total unique social authors (among any TV network; cable/premium cable or broadcast)”....

With the explosion of content and conversations, younger people are filtering in real-time, sometimes consuming and creating simultaneously. To date, filtering technology is rather primitive, especially compared to the human brain. But one of the goals of social TV is to act as a real-time discovery tool, elevating engaging content and meaningful conversations automatically....
