While these websites do not actually contribute image content themselves, they’re able to index images in a way that makes it easier to search for free content. Because the images come from a variety of sources, it is important to note that these websites tend to have a worse track record when it comes to filtering inappropriate content for students. When it comes to searching for images for my blog, Bing is the clear winner for one simple reason; while Google and Yahoo also allow you to filter by license types, Bing is the only one that will search strictly public domain images. You can’t beat public domain when it comes to blog images. You can freely modify images, use them commercially, and no attribution (or research into attribution) is needed....

Older resource for visuals but Dan Leeman's sources for free images are organized to help you find what you’re looking for. And he has a list of terrific niche sources like photos of the earth, archives and categories of all types. My current fav is Pixabay!

The New York Public Library just released a treasure trove of digitized public domain images, everything from epic poetry from the 11th century to photographs of used car lots in Columbus, Ohio from the 1930s. Over 180,000 manuscripts, maps, photographs, sheet music, lithographs, postcards, and other images were released online Wednesday in incredibly high resolution, and are available to download using the library's user-friendly visualization tool. It's a nostalgist's dream come true....

Recently I have seen more and more beautiful photos used on websites, themes, design mockups and shots on Dribbble. I don’t know who has started this out but I highly appreciate Unsplash initiative for providing beautiful free stock photos to do whatever you want. I have been inspired by this movement and started sharing some of my best mobile photos on Refe as well. As a designer personally, I can’t stand ugly cliché stock photos, amateur level pictures and other low quality imagery used in any form of design. I am constantly in search of beautiful photos for my personal and client work and thought that you may find this collection useful....

Some of these sites I’ve been using for years, like when I was creating my most recent SlideShare deck: 7 Ways to Grow Your Online Course Audience.
Others are newer finds from some trusted resources, like Buffer blog, nu School, andBootstrap Bay.
The following sites made the list because one, the photos they share are beautiful, and two, the photos are compelling images that do not look like the typical, generic stock image. The photos make an impact. Plus searching around the sites aren’t difficult either.
Importantly, I’ve done all the hard work for you. I’ve checked to make sure that each photo site in this list falls under the Creative Commons Zero license. AKA they are free to use for your commercial and personal needs! (Find a more detailed legal explanation at the end)...

I'm not going to encourage anyone not to give attribution or credit for the images - however always useful to have good sources of free to use images. Important that students learn that the pictures they find and want to include in presentations have to be sourced and cited appropriately.
