The craziest interview questions of 2013

The craziest interview questions of 2013 | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
If you're on the job market, you'd better beware of these wacky interview questions. Glassdoor lists the 25 strangest questions from different companies. Do you know how many cows are in Canada? Yo...
Trish Sadar's insight:

Yes some companies or some hiring managers still do ask unique interview questions.  Every company and hiring manager has their own style and set of favorite questions.

What is important to know, is that questions like the ones mentioned in this article are still being asked.  The question is what do you need to do to be prepared?

From my humble view:  Most employers are looking to identify strengths in their candidates such as critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making.

The key is not to let the questions throw you off course.  Stay true to who you are and remain professional.  Use your critical thinking skills to explain how you arrived at a decision.

The “It” Factor is the “Fit” Factor

The “It” Factor is the “Fit” Factor | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
At the end of a presentation on “Interviewing Secrets” I delivered to a women’s professional networking group, I threw in some last minute comments on the latest trends in interviewing questions.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Companies like Zappos know the importance in hiring talent, not based on experience and capabilities alone; however, based on the FIT factor.

This article talks about how Fit is the new IT Factor and visa versa.

The article also has example interview questions that some companies are now using like, "From a scale of 1 to 10 how lucky are you."

I have always believed in hiring talented individuals who are aligned with the organization's mission, values, and service philosophy.

Of course it is a given that the candidates should meet the essential functions of the position and the requirements.

Hope you enjoy the article.  Make it a great day!

3 Pre-Interview Confidence Boosters

3 Pre-Interview Confidence Boosters | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
Sweaty palms.
Shaky voice.
Blank mind.
These symptoms of nervousness can seriously sabotage a job interview, no matter how prepared and qualified you are.

Via James Schreier, WEAREAUSTINGOCENTER
Trish Sadar's insight:

It is natural and normal to have a bit of the jitters before an interview.  Take a quick read on a few tips to squash the nerves.

My personal advice:

1.  Do your homework on the company, on the position, on the interviewer, and on why the company shoudl hire you.  The more preparation, the more likely it is that you will feel more confident.  The confidence will help you to connect more, and be your best you.

2. Avoid drinking caffeine before the interview.  Studies show that Caffeine will magnify, and could potentially distort your nerves.

3.  Know that jitters is really energy, and all you have to do is channel the energy.

4.  Practice answering questions with friends and family.  Record some of your responses, and listen to how you sound.  The chances are you are going to sound a lot less nervous than you thought you sounded.  Doing this will help to calm you.

I hope that these suggestions help.  Make it a great day!

Trish Sadar's insight:

The goal of preparation is to focus on preparing yourself to walk into the interview feeling confident and prepared.  That way you can be yourself and focus on connecting and listening to the interviewer to demonstrate interest.

Bad Interview, Now What? How to Learn From a Bad Job Interview

Bad Interview, Now What? How to Learn From a Bad Job Interview | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
It can be hard to stay positive while you are hunting for a job and get a rejection letter. After all, job hunting can be really tough, especially if it’s been some time since you were successful.
Everyone has a bad interview occasionally.
Trish Sadar's insight:

We have all had interviews that did not go the way that we imagined...right?

You could have been caught off guard, a question could have stumped you, you could have rambled, or you simply weren't in the zone that day.  Its okay...it happens to the best of us!

I know that some of you have described the interview process as painful as dating.  I guess that is somewhat true....you work towards searching for the right person (employer), you are invited on a date (interview), you wait eagerly for the call, and you hope to be called again.  When you are hit by rejection whether it is with dating or a job position, it still hurts.

The key in interviewing, is to pick yourself up, learn from the interview, and keep moving forward.  Each interview gives us with so many lessons that books can't teach you...about you and how you responded to different situations.

Ask yourself "what can I do the next interview to learn and prepare to put my best foot forward?"

Let me tell you about a bartender who was applying internally for their first management position.  The interview didn't go so well, and an outside candidate was hired for the position.  This person didn't let rejection hold them down.  They sent a thank you letter to the Department Manager and the HR Manager.  The letter asked them to keep them in mind if other management positions were available.  Well, wouldn't you know it that manager didn't last more than a couple of weeks, and that person was called in and hired for the management position.  (That story that I just shared was about ME!)

I had such wonderful mentors in my life that didn't let me give up, and allowed me to focus all of my energy on what I could do.

So....don't give up!  I want to be here to help you through your major career decisions so you don't have to do it alone.

Thank you for honoring me by reading the posts!

How to Make a Good First Impression at a Job Interview

How to Make a Good First Impression at a Job Interview | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
You know the old saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” That’s especially true when it comes to a job interview.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Of course:

Arrive ten minutes early to the interview

Bring extra copies of the resume (in case you interview with other people)

dress to impress (dress professional)

Polish up:  Take that extra 2 minutes to make sure that from head to toe you are ready.  that means from your head to your toes.  Make sure your shoes are polished, your nails are trimmed and clean, your breath is fresh, etc.

The 1 Thing You Must Do In Every Job Interview

The 1 Thing You Must Do In Every Job Interview | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
I recently interviewed an excellent candidate for a position at our growing startup, Likeable Local. The woman had an incredible resume, an infectious personality, and, seemingly, a great work ethic.
Trish Sadar's insight:

This article made some excellent points:

1.  Some employers may perceive a candidate saying that they do not have any questions for them as showing that they were not really interested.

This article states:  Not asking questions "could be a fatal error, of course. By not asking questions, she told me she wasn’t truly interested in learning more, in creating value, and in our company."

2.  When asking questions, make them about how you can contribute to the company instead of the other way around.  You will sent a positive message.

Take a look at the 9 sample question this article suggests:  (#1 and #2 are some of my favorite questions to ask!!)

1) Who would make the ideal candidate for this position?

2) How will the work I’ll be doing contribute to the organization’s mission?

3) What were the best things about the last person who held this position?

4) What are three ways I can contribute to the company beyond the job description?

5) How can I best contribute to the department’s goals?

6) How do you see me best contributing to the corporate culture and morale?

7) What do you see as the biggest challenges of working here and how can I overcome those challenges?

8) What is your vision for where the company or department will be in one year? In 3-5 years?

9) How can I best help you and the team succeed?

Of course, the more research you do in advance, the more you can ask specific questions about the company’s recent news, blog posts, product launches, plans, etc. But here’s the bottom line

Hope you enjoy the article.  Do you have some questions you could offer to our readers?

Trish Sadar's insight:

Please read this article!!!!!!

I can't tell you how many times I have been interrupted while I was talking by the candidate. Or how many times I have had to stop the interviewer from going on and on about a subject.

If this has happened to you...it may be that you are not watching the interviewer's body language or verbal cues.  It also could mean that your interview did not go so well?

If the interviewer is talking more than you are....that may be a good sign.  Let them talk.
