There's new evidence that a widely used and expensive treatment for arthritis of the knee joint is as useful as a placebo injection to reduce pain.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from a patient's own blood and is injected into the knee to promote tissue healing and reduce inflammation.
The lack of high-quality evidence supporting its use prompted researchers from the University of Melbourne, Sydney and Monash to investigate the benefits.
