Use Blender 3D To Emulate Every Possible Lighting

Use Blender 3D To Emulate Every Possible Lighting | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"One of the ways to understand how light works in photographs is to do basic exercises. We did one way by creating the portrait lighting cheat sheet that shows how positioning a single light effect a portrait, others have done similar stuff with an egg.

Photographer Pat David had another idea. Using a CC-BY 3D scan by Infinite Realities and an open source 3D modeling software called Blender 3D (Blender is darn near real rendering engine, it can even mimic shaped bokeh), he started to play with positioning various light sourced around the scanned head."

Striking Multiple Exposure Shot of Takeoffs at Hannover Airport

Striking Multiple Exposure Shot of Takeoffs at Hannover Airport | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"In this striking multiple exposure shot, Korean photographer Ho-Yeol Ryu shows an assortment of planes taking off at Hannover Airport in Germany. While it may seem like a lot of airplanes, this scene is quite typical. Now just imagine this occurring at airports all over the world, every single day of the year and you start to realize just how much air traffic there really is. Be sure to check out the startling simulation of air traffic in a 24-hour period below, it may surprise a few of you"

A Bit of 3250mm Fun

A Bit of 3250mm Fun | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"It’s winter. It’s slow. We get bored. We have lots of stuff to play with. Too much stuff and too much time leads to all kinds of trouble. I mean experimenting to find combinations of equipment that might benefit our customers. So anyway, Joey decided it would be a superb idea to take a tiny little Nikon V1 mirrorless camera with it’s 2.7 crop factor and put it on the back of a Nikon 600mm f4 VR with a 2X teleconverter. I mean, who doesn’t need a 3250mm equivalent lens, right?"

Using A Motorized Yoyo As A Panning Slider

Using A Motorized Yoyo As A Panning Slider | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
I just love it when people use ordinary stuff to create new gear. Take a Yoyo for example. It's built to roll and collect wire, reminds you of something? It reminded Marc Cocchio a basic slider. And indeed a slider was build from a yoyo.

Fully Automated Lego Pinhole Camera

Fully Automated Lego Pinhole Camera | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
We've our share of Lego cameras before, but I think this is the first time DIYP features a fully automated Lego made pinhole camera.

Lego Enthusiast Bshikin build a camera from Lego parts and added quite a bit of automation using Lego Mindstorms (Lego for building machines). And the code is available via Google Code.

The Camera features include automated exposure meter, automated shutter and mechanical film advance. The Pretty nifty for a few Lego bricks.

Fotoopa’s unbelievable Nikon custom rig for capturing insects in flight

Fotoopa’s unbelievable Nikon custom rig for capturing insects in flight | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
I have covered Flickr member Fotoopa and his custom made Nikon rig for capturing insects in flight in the past. He now has an improved monster machine. The main camera is a Nikon D300 + 105mm f/2.8D lens but there is an external shutter Uniblitz VS14 between the camera and the lens that reduces the shutter lag from 52 msec to 3.3 msec.

Overkill: Use an Old Pacemaker To Control Delay In A Drop Shot

Overkill: Use an Old Pacemaker To Control Delay In A Drop Shot | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"I've seen some crazy setups for high speed photography utilizing all sorts of weird parts. There is even a system that will turn the lights off for you, if you so please. But, this is the first time I am seeing such a huge overkill in term of components used to gain some control over the circuit."

With a recent mention about the connection between DIYP and IKEA, I thought that it would be fun to feature a beauty dish made with the very appropriate named IKEA FOTO.

It is a simple build, the smarts here are in the bracket that takes the load of the strobe head and allows for easy mounting on a

SLR Magic takes over the Noktor brand, shows a 28mm f/2.8 NEX lens prototype | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
SLR Magic contacted me to clarify the recent reports about them taking over Noktor’s website which happened just few days after Noktor officially closed it down. Obviously the old Noktor company went out of business. SLR Magic will now design Noktor lenses and sell Noktor products under the SLR Magic brand. No specific plans were given for the future of the Noktor 50mm f/0.95 lens for Micro Four Thirds but SLR Magic representative confirmed that they are planing to continue the Noktor line with ultra fast lenses.

Next month SLR Magic will start shipping a new 28mm f/2.8 pancake lens for Sony NEX system.
