Matthew A. Dolman's insight:

Your spinal cord is the most important part of your body, as its bundles of nerves facilitate communications between the brain and the rest of your body. Because of its primary role in physical functioning, injuries to the spinal cord can have dire consequences. The communications from the brain are often interrupted, resulting in loss of sensation or movement abilities in the areas of the body below the point of the injury. Because of the often grave effects of spinal cord injuries, this is considered to be a “catastrophic” injury. Often, victims of spinal cord injuries are left with permanent and severe disabilities and the need for long-lasting medical treatment and care.

Matthew A. Dolman's insight:

On March 6, 2016, Kristopher Boesen was driving down a California road when he lost control of his car. The vehicle swerved back and forth before ramping off the road, slamming into a tree, and crashing into a telephone pole. Kris, who was about to turn 21, suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury. When he woke up in the hospital, he was paralyzed from the neck down; his life was forever changed.

Doctors warned Kris’ parents, Rodney and Annette Boesen, that he may be permanently paralyzed. He would most likely never walk, feed, or bathe himself ever again. He would need around-the-clock care and constant assistance with most of life’s tasks.
