#OSFest15 - May 21, 22: Just a few steps into the main entry hall of Cabaret Sauvage, the site of the OuiShare 2015 event, was a large, black chalkboard. On the board there was a drawing of an elephant, and the phrase, “Share Your Elephant in the Room”. In case the expression “elephant in the room” isn’t familiar, it refers to a very obvious fact which nobody wants to talk about, one which is more convenient to politely ignore. I regret not taking a picture of that sign, because as the second and third days of OuiShareFest 2015 proceeded, it became clear that the elephant was loose in the room and, more importantly, lots of voices were calling him out.

In Paris this week, at the Ouishare Fest, the great and the good from Europe's sharing economy have been delving deep into what it means to be running a collaborative business model within a capitalist framework. Are the two even compatible? Or is there a fundamental conflict at the heart of an industry that preaches collaboration but, due to being radically commercialised by venture capital money from Silicon Valley, also needs to profiteer from the goodwill of others if it's to remain viable?

Wednesday May 20th was the opening of OuiShare Fest 2015, held again in Paris under this year’s theme “Lost in Transition”. Casual conversation about this theme was a good icebreaker; most people I spoke with felt that the theme had a rather dark tone, although a few felt it was nothing more than a provocative choice of words. “Being lost does not mean that we should give up our hope for a happy ending, but that the happy ending depends on us”, noted Francesca Pick, OuiShare Fest Co-Chair and International Community Connector in her article about the debate that surrounded the name-choosing process.

What does blockchain – the cryptographic technology that powers crypto-currencies like Bitcoin – has to do with the collaborative economy?
