Our fortieth year at Project for Public Spaces was an exciting one, and it took us all over the world, from the public markets of Barcelona to Stockholm’s City Hall. For some time, placemaking was a strong but “quiet movement.” But after the year we just had, we think it’s safe to say that the secret is out.

The early Islamic cities embodied a new way of living, promoted and supported by the Islamic law and the life of the Prophet and his successors. The idea of ‘paradise’ as a reward for the Muslim faithful was the basic concept developed by Muhammad from the beginning of his apostolic mission in Mecca. [1] This was more than an abstract vision of future bliss because the Prophet made many specific statements as to the garden’s iconography, topography, its nature and its inhabitants. Since then these descriptions have played an important role in the Muslim ideology in relation to the built environment.

The Garden City Model merits special attention, as Garden Cities that took land out of the market were a full expression of radical socialist and co-operative economy planning. Nowadays, a number of parts of the world are showing an interest in reviving them.

For now, Africa is known for it's lack of urban areas. There are more rural and agricultural areas than urban areas. However, its economy strength is thought to improve Africa's urban life. Burkina Faso seems to be the most grown city (in GDP & population) in Africa.
